Mangan gets Organic Sabji Haat in the DAC Complex
Mangan, July 31 (IPR): Minister Mr Samdup Lepcha, inaugurated and formally dedicated a newly constructed waiting shed at the entrance of the Old DAC Building in Mangan to the Self Help Groups (SHGs) under Mangan District. The initiative aims to provide SHG members and visitors with a comfortable, sheltered space that promotes accessibility and encourages community engagement.
A key feature of the new facility is the introduction of an Organic Sabji Haat within the shed. Here, SHGs can display and sell fresh organic vegetables and locally produced goods. The initiative not only empowers local farmers and entrepreneurs but also promotes sustainable agriculture and healthy food practices within the district.
The programme was attended by DC Mangan Mr Anant Jain, SP Mangan Mr Sonam Detchu Bhutia, ADC Mangan Mr Pema Wangchen Namkarpa, ADC Development Mangan, Dr Sonam R Lepcha, Departmental heads, BDO Mangan Mr Kailash Thapa, Panchayats, SHG members, and local residents, reflecting strong community support for grassroots development and self-reliant livelihoods.
Importantly, the inauguration marks a significant step forward for SHGs under BAC Mangan, with 134 registered SHGs now gaining access to stall space on a rotational basis at the shed. This ensures equal opportunity for all SHGs to showcase their products and connect with consumers. The Block Development Officer (BDO) Mangan, Mr Kailash Thapa has been authorized to manage and monitor the use of the space, which will be provided free of cost to SHGs operating across the district.
Minister Mr Samdup Lepcha in his brief address lauded the efforts of the district administration, particularly the District Collector, for initiating such a meaningful and innovative project. He described the Organic Sabji Haat as a reflection of community desire, transformed into practical innovation delivering a dual benefit to both producers and consumers. He emphasised that the haat provides sellers with an opportunity to generate income, while consumers gain access to fresh, organic produce at reasonable prices.
He also conveyed his best wishes to all SHG members and encouraged them to take full advantage of the platform to grow their enterprises and contribute to local development.
The Minister further highlighted the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) in promoting women empowerment across Sikkim. He specifically mentioned the newly notified Aama Samman Diwas, to be celebrated annually on August 10, which recognises and supports mothers and women through various welfare schemes. He noted that such initiatives are vital steps in fostering dignity, independence, and opportunities for women across the state.
DC Mangan Mr Anant Jain in his address called for judicious use of the space, ensuring reasonable rates of the products on sale and proper maintenance. He thanked the Minister for sparing his time to inaugurate the facility and providing motivation to the SHGs. He lauded the efforts of BDO Mangan Mr Kailash Thapa for coming up with the proposal and for overall coordination to make the programme a success.
The inauguration of the SHG waiting shed and Organic Sabji Haat represents a forward-looking initiative rooted in sustainability, inclusivity, and empowerment. It sets a strong example of how collaborative governance and community participation can drive meaningful change at the grassroots level.
