MPCS Building Inaugurated during Cooperative Week Celebration at Singhik
MANGAN, July 3 (IPR): As part of the nationwide Cooperative Week Celebration being observed from June 29 to July 6, the Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society (MPCS) Building-cum-Annual General Meeting was held at Singhik today.
The programme commenced with the inauguration of the newly constructed Rural Marketing Centre-cum-MPCS Godown by the Chief Guest, Zilla Adhyaksha Mr Kado Lepcha. The event was attended by Zilla Upadhyaksha Mrs Sonam Kipa, Additional Registrar of Cooperative Societies (ARCS) Mr PT Lepcha, SE Agriculture Ms Sarita Subba, AD AH&VS Dr Dechen O Kaleon, officials of the Cooperation and Agriculture Departments, members of the cooperative society and local residents.
During the programme, messages from the Governor, Chief Minister and Minister for Cooperation were telecast, conveying their greetings and best wishes on the occasion of Cooperative Week while reaffirming the Government's commitment to strengthening the cooperative movement in the State.
SE, Agriculture Department, Ms Sarita Subba, presented the technical report on the construction of the Rural Marketing Centre-cum-MPCS Godown. She informed that the two-storeyed RCC building has been designed to serve as a storage facility, meeting hall, staff office and marketing outlet for products of Self Help Groups (SHGs). The project commenced on 29 August 2025 and was completed on 4 March 2026. The infrastructure has been developed with adequate office space, meeting facilities, storage provisions and sanitation amenities to support the functioning of the cooperative society.
Audit Officer Mr Pravesh Bhujal presented the audit report of the society. The programme also featured the screening of videos highlighting the importance of cooperatives, a cooperative group song by departmental staff, and the presentation of a Certificate of Appreciation to land donor Mr Tseten Lepcha in recognition of his valuable contribution towards the establishment of the MPCS building.
Earlier, ARCS Mr P. T. Lepcha highlighted the major schemes and initiatives of the Cooperation Department. He informed that Mangan district presently has 305 cooperative societies with over 9,000 members. He stated that Cooperative Week, celebrated across the country, aims to strengthen the cooperative movement by promoting collective growth, self-reliance and inclusive rural development. He also spoke on the Department's ongoing efforts towards the digitalisation of Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) to improve transparency, efficiency, accessibility of services and financial inclusion for rural communities.
Addressing the gathering, Zilla Upadhyaksha Mrs Sonam Kipa expressed her gratitude to land donor Shri Tseten Lepcha, stating that the project would not have been possible without his generous contribution. She emphasised the need for establishing more MPCSs in remote areas of the district to enable local communities to become self-sufficient and economically empowered.
In his address, Chief Guest Mr Kado Lepcha congratulated the department and the cooperative society on the successful completion of the project. He underlined the importance of such infrastructure in remote rural areas, where access to essential goods is often limited and prices are comparatively higher. He observed that the Rural Marketing Centre has immense potential to provide a reliable market for local produce and improve the livelihoods of farmers and Self Help Groups. He further stated that the success of the centre would depend on the commitment, innovation and active participation of the cooperative members. He also urged the department to continue providing guidance and technical support to the society so that the full potential of the MPCS could be realised.
