Pakyong, 3 July (IPR): Mrs. Pamin Lepcha, MLA Gnathang Machong, accompanied by Mr Agawane Rohan Ramesh, District Collector, led a comprehensive joint inspection of the Gnathang Machong area, which had been severely impacted by the recent torrential rainfall.
The team, comprising SDM Pakyong, AE WRD Irrigation, AE Road and Bridge, AE PMGYS, RO/AD Pakyong, officials from the Forest Department, Building Department, Project Manager from Nalanda Company, Project Manager from ND Ent. Pvt Ltd, and an Engineer from NHDCL, conducted a thorough assessment of the situation.
The first stop was NH 717/B Road at Chuchen, where a landslide had occurred. The MLA directed the contractor to clear the debris and boulders and expedite the restoration of a protective wall, setting a deadline of 15 days for completion.
Next, the team proceeded to Latuk Bridge, which was in a dilapidated state following a flash flood on June 10th. Here, the MLA instructed the Irrigation and PWD departments to assess and estimate the necessary protective measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Continuing their evaluation, the team visited Thek Village to meet the residents affected by the flash floods. The MLA engaged in discussions with the locals, assuring them of the Sikkim Government's unwavering support in their time of need.
Furthermore, the DC Pakyong informed the team that ex-gratia payments had been disbursed in accordance with NC norms and instructed Revenue officials to devise a plan for compensation for land damage.
The inspection also included a visit to the damaged abutment of a 30-meter-span steel bridge over Narey Khola along the Chochen Pheri to Thek road, a part of the PMGSY Road Rural Development Department.
Despite the initiation of restoration work by the department with the assistance of NHIDCL machinery, progress was hindered by challenging site conditions and the high water levels of the river.
In response, the MLA emphasized the urgency of expediting the restoration work and urged the department to complete the repairs as swiftly as possible to mitigate further risks and prevent additional damages.
