Khet Bachao Abhiyan Launched at Pakyong Yakten GPK to Promote Sustainable Farming

Pakyong, June 4 (IPR): In line with the nationwide Khet Bachao Abhiyan (Save the Field Campaign) being observed from June 1 to June 30, 2026, under the directives of the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, a farmer awareness programme was conducted at Pakyong Yakten Gram Panchayat Kendra (GPK) on Thursday.
The programme aimed at creating awareness among farmers on sustainable agricultural practices, soil health management, government welfare schemes, and conservation of agricultural land.
The event was graced by Councillor Mr Rakesh Basnett as the Chief Guest, in the presence of Panchayat members Ms Rosila Gurung and Ms Sarita Chettri as Guests of Honour. The programme witnessed participation from Agricultural Technology Managers (ATMs), Block Technology Managers (BTMs), farmers, and field functionaries from Pachey Samsing and Pakyong Yakten GPKs.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Guest appreciated the initiative undertaken by the Agriculture Department and encouraged farmers to actively avail themselves of the various schemes, subsidies, and technical assistance provided by the Agriculture and allied departments for improving agricultural productivity and livelihoods. The Guests of Honour also stressed the importance of scientific farming methods and the need to preserve agricultural land to ensure sustainable livelihoods for future generations.
The programme commenced with registration of participants followed by a welcome address and an overview of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan campaign delivered by Agriculture Development Officer (ADO), Agriculture Department, Mr Gagan Gurung, who highlighted the objectives and significance of the month-long campaign.
During the technical session, Deputy Director, Agriculture Department, Ms Rebecca Gurung, provided detailed information on various departmental schemes and emphasised the importance of soil fertility management to improve crop productivity and maintain long-term agricultural sustainability.
Horticulture Development Officer (HDO), Horticulture Department, Ms Menuka Rai, briefed participants on horticulture-based schemes and soil health management practices aimed at enhancing farm income and promoting scientific cultivation methods.
Further, Deputy Director, Agriculture Department, Ms Sangita Basnett, elaborated on Integrated Nutrient Management and highlighted the benefits of the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) scheme, encouraging farmers to utilise institutional financial support for agricultural development.
The programme also featured an informative session by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Pakyong, represented by Dr Prakash Sharma, Head of KVK, who highlighted the institution’s activities, agricultural technologies, and extension services being implemented to support the farming community across the district.
An interactive discussion session formed an important part of the programme, enabling farmers to raise queries and receive expert guidance on various agricultural concerns. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Binita Chettri, ADO, Agriculture Department.
The Khet Bachao Abhiyan will continue across Pakyong District throughout the month of June with the objective of spreading awareness on sustainable farming, soil conservation, government agricultural schemes, and farmer welfare initiatives, while encouraging the protection of cultivable land.
