Khangchendzonga State University, Sikkim, Hosts 4th Convocation
Gangtok, March 14 (IPR): The 4th Convocation of the Khangchendzonga State University (KSU), Sikkim, was held at Chintan Bhawan this morning, marking a significant milestone for graduating students.
The ceremony was graced by the Governor of Sikkim cum Chancellor KSU, Mr Om Prakash Mathur and Minister for Education, Sports & Youth Affairs and Law & Parliamentary Departments, Mr Raju Basnet.
In his speech, the Governor & Chancellor of KSU, Mr Om Prakash Mathur, in his address,emphasised that the reputation of an institution is established not by sentiment alone, but through meaningful initiatives such as programmes like NCC and NSF, along with the efforts of committed teachers and diligent students.
He further highlighted India’s rise to the fourth position in global GDP rankings and initiatives such as the AI Summit as examples of collaborative national advancement. He inspired the youth, noting that the vision of the Prime Minister places young people at the centre of the nation’s development and future progress.
He urged students to recognise that knowledge should not remain confined to textbooks and that the world itself serves as a vast source of learning. He emphasised that the education system must cultivate character, nationalism, civic awareness and logical reasoning, thereby preparing citizens who are not merely job-seekers but responsible contributors to the nation. He congratulated the graduating students and remarked that true education empowers individuals to enrich both themselves and society.
Speaking on the occasion, the Guest of Honour,Mr Raju Basnet, praised Khangchendzonga State University's efforts, highlighting its growth despite operating from a small campus. He mentioned that the university's Tarku campus is under construction, with completion expected by 2026.
Mr Basnet contextualised Sikkim's educational initiatives, citing the National Education Policy's goal to increase India's Gross Enrollment Ratio in higher education to 50% by 2030. He emphasised universities' role in research and innovation, not just imparting existing knowledge. He urged the university to focus on Artificial Intelligence and technological advancements in curriculum design and pedagogy. Mr Basnet also predicted a shift in education, with schools focusing on socialisation, sports, and skill-building, with teachers mentoring and guiding. Lastly, he advised graduating students to appreciate their parents' and teachers' contributions, respecting their roles in their educational journey, while congratulating the students on their accomplishments.
A total of 87 graduates from KSU pursuing Master's Degrees in Nepali, Sanskrit, Bhutia, Limboo and Lepcha were handed over degrees and awards by Minister for Education, Sports & Youth Affairs, Law & Parliamentary Departments, Mr Raju Basnet, Principal Secretary for Education Department, Dr Sandeep Tambe, and Secretary for Higher Education, Education Department, Ms Tenzing Kizom.
Additionally, the following Gold and Silver Medalists in Master of Arts (MA) in Nepali, Sanskrit, Bhutia, Limboo and Lepcha were felicitated by the Governor cum Chancellor:

The Vice Chancellor of KSU, Prof (Dr) Ashis Sharma, delivered the Welcome Address and presented university highlights. He covered key stats on manpower and student strength, teaching practices, technological developments, faculty achievements, new initiatives, and publications. He also spotlighted the upcoming University Fest, 'Utkarsh', happening for the first time this year.
The Vote of Thanks was given by Registrar KSU, Mr Karma Sonam Bhutia.
The event was also attended by Special Secretary-cum-Director, Higher Education, Department of Education, Mr Ujjwal Rai, officials of the Department of Education, members of the University Court, Executive Council and Academic Council, Vice Chancellors of different universities of Sikkim, Principals of various educational institutions, Dr Sudhan Pradhan, Controller of Examinations, Mr Rohit Kumar Pradhan, Finance Officer KSU, and faculty and students of KSU.
