Joint Inspection conducted at 5th Mile, Tadong

Gangtok, February 13 (IPR): A joint inspection of local commercial establishments in and around the 5th Mile area of Tadong was conducted today to ensure compliance with statutory regulations, public safety norms, and hygiene standards.
The inspection was carried out under the supervision of the Additional District Magistrate, Gangtok, Mr Sisum Wangchuk Bhutia, in the presence of the SDPO, Gangtok, Mr Mingyur Tempo Nadik, along with officials from allied departments.
Among the establishments inspected, special emphasis was laid on the functioning of the petrol pump, 5th Mile, in view of its sensitivity and potential safety risks. The inspecting team verified whether the petrol pump was operating in accordance with the prescribed safety and operational guidelines. Officials checked the validity of the trade license, explosive storage license, and other mandatory permissions required for operating a fuel outlet.
The team examined the availability and proper placement of fire safety equipment, including fire extinguishers and sand buckets, and assessed whether they were in working condition and easily accessible. The presence of adequate warning signage, such as “No Smoking,” “Switch Off Engine,” and “No Mobile Phone Use” boards, was also verified to ensure public awareness and accident prevention.
Officials further inspected the condition of underground storage tanks, fuel dispensing units, and electrical fittings to ensure there was no leakage, faulty wiring, or unsafe installation that could lead to fire hazards. The maintenance of proper distance between dispensing units and surrounding structures, as per safety norms, was also reviewed.
In addition, the availability of trained personnel for handling emergencies, the use of protective gear by staff, and the maintenance of a clean and hazard-free premises were examined. The officials advised the petrol pump management to strictly adhere to standard operating procedures and to ensure regular inspection and servicing of equipment. The inspection team directed the petrol pump authorities to immediately address any shortcomings to maintain full compliance with fire safety and explosive handling guidelines in the interest of public safety.
The inspection of other establishments included pharmacies, fast food outlets, vegetable shops, departmental stores, and hotels. Officials verified the validity of trade licenses, FSSAI certification, and hygiene conditions. The use of domestic or commercial LPG cylinders, the availability of fire extinguishers and their lifetime, and the presence of expired or outdated food products were also checked.
Food items found unfit for consumption and not conforming to prescribed legal standards were seized and detained under section 18(1) read with 36(1) of The Legal Metrology Act, 2009 (1 of 2010) read with Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, for the reasons stated against them. Shop owners and vendors were directed to rectify the identified violations within a period of 15 days and were further instructed to ensure that all licenses and certifications are kept updated.
The joint inspection was conducted to safeguard public health, strengthen fire and consumer safety measures, and ensure strict compliance with existing laws and regulations by commercial establishments.
