Inter-School Cricket Tournament 2026 Begins in Pakyong
Pakyong, April 07 (IPR): The Inter-School Cricket Tournament 2026, Pakyong District, featuring the Kalu Ram Thirani Cup for Under-16 boys and the Murray Cup for Under-19 girls, commenced at Dikling School Ground, Pakyong, today.
The tournament is being organised by the Pakyong District Cricket Committee in collaboration with the Sikkim Cricket Association, with participation of eighteen schools in the Under-16 boys’ category and ten schools in the Under-19 girls’ category.
The tournament provides a platform for identifying and nurturing young cricketing talent at the school level while encouraging wider participation in sports.
The inaugural programme was graced by President, SICA, Mr Tika Subba as the chief guest.
Panchayat members of various wards under the district, SDM Pakyong, Mr NK Bhandari; BDO Pakyong, Mr Sangay Tamang; Assistant RTO, Mr Durga Pd Sharma; Principal, Dikling Senior Secondary School, Mr Deepak Sharma, Former Joint Director, Education Department, Mr BP Sharma and Treasurer, SICA, Mr Biren Gurung also attended the tournament.
Addressing the players, Chief Guest, Mr Tika Subba highlighted the significance of the Inter-School Cricket Tournament, stating that the Kalu Ram Thirani Cup and the Murray Cup have played a key role in the development of cricket in Sikkim. He also referred to the revival of these two competitions, which once played a pivotal role in shaping the sport in the State, and noted the progress achieved over the years through such initiatives.
He informed that various initiatives are being undertaken to promote and strengthen cricket across the State. He further encouraged participants to remain prepared and focus on overall performance, emphasising the importance of being practical and technically sound in the game. He noted that necessary support would be extended by the association and conveyed his best wishes to all participating teams.
The inaugural day witnessed two Under-16 boys' matches today.
The first match was played between PM SHRI Dikling Senior Secondary School and Lingtam Secondary School. In the match, Lingtam Secondary School scored 66 runs for the loss of all wickets in 10.1 overs, while PM SHRI Dikling Senior Secondary School chased the target, scoring 70 runs for the loss of one wicket in 8.2 overs, winning the match by 9 wickets.
Master Sujal Rai of PM SHRI Dikling Senior Secondary School was adjudged Player of the Match.
Likewise, the second match was played between Phadamchen Secondary School and Rangpo Senior Secondary School. In the match, Rangpo Senior Secondary School scored 163 runs for the loss of five wickets in 15 overs, while Phadamchen Secondary School was all out for 46 runs in 12 overs. Rangpo Senior Secondary School won the match by 117 runs.
Master Tshering Topgyal Bhutia of Rangpo Senior Secondary School was adjudged Player of the Match.
It is to be mentioned that matches are being conducted on a knockout basis, with losing teams eliminated at each stage and winning teams progressing to the next round.
The tournament will continue over the coming days as per the fixtures, with the finals scheduled to be held at the Sikkim Cricket Ground, Mining.
Also present were members of the Pakyong District Cricket Committee and the Sikkim Cricket Association.
