Inaugural Training-cum-Workshop for Primary Tribal Language Teachers Held at TRI, Assam Lingzey

The week-long training-cum-workshop for primary tribal language teachers commenced with its inaugural programme at the Tribal Research Institute and Training Centre, Assam Lingzey, today.
The programme is being organised by Tribal Research Institute and Training Centre, Social Welfare Department, in collaboration with Education Department, Government of Sikkim, with support from Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India.
The inaugural programme was graced by Secretary, Social Welfare Department, Ms Sarika Pradhan as chief guest, alongside Additional Director, Directorate of Language and Textbook, Mr AD Chettri, as the special guest.
The aim of the workshop is to strengthen tribal language education in primary schools by enhancing the linguistic and pedagogical skills of primary tribal language teachers.
In her keynote address, Ms Sarika Pradhan informed that the department, with support from the Education Department, has developed a training module for primary tribal teachers, which is being piloted through this workshop. She emphasised that regular capacity building is required to ensure teachers remain updated in their knowledge and continue to support the strengthening of tribal language education.
She further stated that language is not only a medium of communication but also a repository of knowledge carried across generations. She added that each tribal language holds traditional wisdom, and it is important for teachers to instil in students a sense of pride in their language and heritage.
She highlighted the role of teachers in encouraging students to learn and pass on their language to the next generation.
Mentioning that tribal teachers are integral to the language ecosystem, she encouraged them to share suggestions and provide inputs for language development wherever necessary. She mentioned that the programme aims to enhance both linguistic and pedagogical skills, ensuring teachers are confident in teaching tribal languages in schools.
Reiterating the significance of the initiative, she urged participants to make full use of the learning opportunity and contribute to the protection, promotion, and continued development of tribal languages.
During the programme, Mr AD Chettri provided a background on the development of the training module for the five tribal languages and gave an overview of the workshop-cum-training.
He encouraged the teachers to use the workshop as a platform for exchanging ideas to improve the module and support the growth of the languages. He also expressed gratitude to the department for initiating the project.
Following the inaugural session, a technical session was conducted on the National Education Policy 2020, the National Curriculum Framework for School Education, and the Holistic Progress Card. The sessions were facilitated by Senior Lecturer, DIET, Ms Durga Shrestha; Resource Person, SCERT, Ms Larissa Lepcha; and Assistant Professor, SCERT, Ms Lensong Lepcha, respectively.
It is to be noted that the training for primary tribal teachers from 28 to 31 October will be conducted at different venues. Training for Sherpa, Tamang, and Limboo language teachers will be held at SC Bhawan, while training for Bhutia and Lepcha language teachers will be held at BKYT (Makhim). The valedictory session on 1 November will be held at the Tribal Research Institute, Assam Lingzey.
The programme also had the presence of Additional Secretary, Social Welfare Department, Ms Bandana Chettri; Joint Secretary, Social Welfare Department, Ms Kabita Subba; Joint Director, Directorate of Language and Textbook, Ms Doma Zimba; Senior Text Book Officers, Text Book Officers and Assistant Text Book Officers and officials from Tribal Research Institute and Training Centre.
