IPR Launches e-Language Learning Series to Uphold HCM’s Vision of Cultural Preservation

Date: 01-Nov-2025
The Information and Public Relations Department (IPR) has launched the e-Language Learning Series, a landmark initiative aimed at promoting and preserving the indigenous official languages of Sikkim. The initiative was officially launched on September 5, 2025, by the IPR Department under the guidance of the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Shri Prem Singh Tamang Golay.
The series seeks to make language learning accessible, engaging, and meaningful for both the people of Sikkim and the global Sikkimese diaspora through short educational videos disseminated across digital and social media platforms.
The Press Secretary to the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Shri Yougan Tamang, visited the IPR Department today to understand the structure and progress of the initiative. During the visit, he interacted with department officials and appreciated their dedication, creativity, and innovative approach towards realizing this unique linguistic preservation project.
Sikkim is a proud mosaic of cultures, communities, and ethnicities, each with its distinct language and heritage. However, globalization and evolving lifestyles have gradually led to a decline in the active use of many indigenous languages. Recognizing the importance of preserving linguistic diversity as a cornerstone of cultural identity, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Prem Singh Tamang Golay, has consistently promoted policies and initiatives that safeguard and celebrate the State’s rich cultural legacy.
Under his leadership, several significant steps have been taken to conserve both the tangible and intangible heritage of Sikkim’s communities. The Hon’ble Chief Minister’s deep respect for linguistic inclusivity is reflected in his various directives to use regional languages in various medium of communications and promotions. This measure not only enhances accessibility but also reaffirms his commitment to inclusive governance and the preservation of Sikkim’s linguistic identity.
As the Minister-in-Charge of the IPR Department, the Hon’ble Chief Minister has encouraged the use of modern communication tools to connect the youth with their linguistic and cultural roots. The e-Language Learning Series features lessons in eleven languages: Lepcha, Mukhia, Bhutia, Tamang, Limboo, Rai, Sherpa, Mangar, Tibetan, Gurung, and Nepali with efforts underway to enlist experts for Newari language instruction.
From Monday to Friday, new videos for each language are uploaded on the official social media platforms of the Government of Sikkim - YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, managed by the IPR Department. Each short-format video (1–3 minutes) is designed to be concise, engaging, and informative, allowing viewers to easily grasp key linguistic and cultural insights within a brief span.
Additionally, Sikkim Herald, published by the IPR Department, continues to serve as another pillar of inclusivity by being released in twelve regional languages, ensuring that government communication reaches every linguistic community of the State.
The e-Language Learning Series stands as a reflection of the Hon’ble Chief Minister’s belief that language is not just a means of communication but a living expression of identity, heritage, and belonging. Through this initiative, Sikkim continues to strengthen its multilingual legacy and inspire its citizens to stay connected to their cultural roots.
“Language binds us to our roots and reminds us who we are. By preserving it, we preserve our identity,” the Hon’ble Chief Minister has often emphasised a thought that continues to inspire this movement of cultural preservation and pride.
The Press Secretary to the Hon’ble Chief Minister acknowledged the Secretary, IPR, along with all officials and staff of the Department, for their innovative initiative and for working in alignment with the Hon’ble Chief Minister’s mission of building a “Sunaulo, Samriddha, and Samarth Sikkim.”
