Hee-Gyathang GPK Launches Self-Reliance Training Programme on Mushroom Cultivation
Hee-Gyathang, Dzongu-26 June 2025
In a commendable stride toward rural self-reliance and livelihood enhancement, the Hee-Gyathang Gram Prashasan Kendra (GPK) under Dzongu Block successfully conducted a hands-on training programme on mushroom cultivation today. This initiative was part of the Gram Panchayat Development Plan (GPDP) and focused on capacitating Self-Help Groups (SHGs) with sustainable and income-generating skills.
What makes this programme especially noteworthy is the community-led approach: the training was facilitated by local Panchayat members who themselves had previously undergone formal training in mushroom farming. With additional support from local resource persons, the one-day session empowered participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, underlining the Panchayat’s vision of “by the people, for the people.”
Over 30 mushroom cultivation cylinders (straw bags with spawn) were prepared during the workshop and placed in production units—marking a significant first step towards commercial mushroom farming in the GPU.
This initiative reflects the Government of Sikkim’s commitment to promoting self-employment and grassroots entrepreneurship in rural areas. By fostering self-reliance through such practical trainings, the Hee-Gyathang Panchayat aims to strengthen the local economy and support SHGs in creating viable livelihood avenues within their own communities.
