Greetings on (IDPD)

On December 3 the world commemorates the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). This year’s theme, “Amplifying the leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable future”, resonates deeply with Sikkim commitment to inclusive education.
In this connection all the Special Educators working under Education Department, Govt. of Sikkim convey greetings to the Govt.,NGOs, stakeholders and special citizens for striving hard to safeguard and uplift the cause of disabilities in the right direction.
The right based approach to disability is incomplete without recognising their educational rights with high support needs, in this regard Sikkim Govt. is doing commendable job.
Sikkim’s Progress in Inclusive Education:
Sikkim has made significant strides in providing Inclusive Education opportunities for children with disabilities. The state Govt. has implemented various initiatives to ensure that every child, regardless of their abilities, has access to quality education. Sikkim has been actively fostering inclusive education to ensure equitable access to quality learning for children, including those with disabilities and other marginalised groups.
Government initiatives and policies:
Samagra Shiksha :
Under this centrally sponsored scheme, Sikkim has established resource rooms and appointed RCI registered Special Educators ( specialised in different disability subject areas) to support children with special needs (CWSN).
Regular teacher training programs focus on sensitized educators about inclusive practices.
Right to Education (RTE) Act Implementation:
The state emphasizes inclusive classrooms where children with disabilities study alongside their peers. School are mandated to provide necessary accommodations and resources.
Accessible Infrastructure:
Many schools in Sikkim are being upgraded with ramps, railings, accessible toilets, and other facilities to cater to students with mobility challenges.
Collaboration with NGOs:
Organizations such as Sense International and Bethany Society actively partner with the government to provide technical and infrastructural support for inclusive education.
Key Features of Inclusive Education in Sikkim

Dedicated teachers trained in inclusive teaching methods support the learning of children with diverse needs.
Use of Technology:
Smart classrooms, assistive devices, and learning applications are incorporated to help students with disabilities access education seamless.

Regular campaigns and parental involvement workshops aim to change societal attitudes toward children with disabilities.
