Goat Distribution Drive Underway in Pakyong, Aims to Enhance Rural Income and Nutrition
Pakyong, March 27 (IPR): The Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH & VS) Department, Pakyong District, concluded the final leg of the Goat Distribution Drive under the Rainfed Area Development (RAD) Programme today at Pachey, benefitting farmers of the Pachey Phirphirey Cluster. This event marks the completion of crossbred goat distribution across all six targeted districts of Sikkim.
During the drive, Additional Director, Small Ruminants HQ, Dr Tashi Chozang Bhutia, shared that the distribution had already been successfully completed in five districts, and Pakyong was the final distribution centre under this phase of the programme.
As part of the drive, a total of 30 cross-bred goats, comprising 24 females and 6 males, were distributed to identified beneficiaries. The selected animals are intended primarily for breeding purposes, with the aim to popularise and improve livestock productivity and support sustainable rural livelihoods.
Dr Bhutia emphasised the importance of small ruminants in enhancing the income and nutritional security of households, especially in rainfed and hilly regions.
The programme also included the distribution of essential veterinary medicines and dewormers, ensuring that beneficiaries are equipped not only with livestock but also with the necessary tools to maintain animal health, prevent common diseases, and maximise productivity.
The beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the AH & VS Department and the Government of Sikkim for this timely support, which is expected to contribute significantly to their economic upliftment.
Also present during the distribution drive were Additional Director Dr Anjala Pradhan, Panchayat President Pachey Samsung GPU Mr HB Gurung, Panchayat Pachey, Ms Rosila Gurung, and local farmers and community members.
