Pakyong, October 15 (IPR): A Girls’ Changing Room was dedicated at Mamring Government Senior Secondary School, Pakyong, today by the Sulabh Sanitation Club, with support from Alkem Foundation.
The facility aims to address the sanitation and menstrual hygiene needs of adolescent girls by providing privacy, access to water, space for changing sanitary products and facilities for menstrual waste disposal.
The initiative seeks to improve school sanitation infrastructure and support girls in managing menstruation while attending classes and participating in school activities.
During the programme, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Pakyong, Mr Targyen Lepcha, stated that sanitation facilities were an important part of the school environment. He noted that dedicated changing rooms could address the needs of adolescent girls and support their attendance and participation in school. He also highlighted the role of collaboration between the Government, schools and organisations such as Sulabh and Alkem in strengthening school infrastructure.
Mr Samir Kumar of Alkem Foundation said that the partnership with Sulabh International aimed to improve sanitation facilities and promote the dignity, health and well-being of students. He expressed hope that the collaboration would extend similar facilities to more schools across Sikkim.
Coordinator of Sulabh Sanitation Club, Ms Samikshya Das Mohapatra, said that girls should not have to miss school due to difficulties in managing menstruation. She added that changing rooms could support their privacy, confidence and education.
Assistant Director, District Education Office, Pakyong, Mr Kailash Sharma, highlighted the need for dedicated changing rooms for girls in government schools. He stated that such facilities provide privacy and convenience, particularly during menstruation and in situations requiring a change of clothes. He also emphasised the importance of providing appropriate sanitation infrastructure to encourage girls’ regular attendance at school.
The initiative forms part of the efforts of Sulabh International Sanitation Club to promote sanitation, hygiene education and menstrual hygiene management among schoolchildren.
