From Saplings to Success Stories: MRMS Continues to Transform Lives and Landscapes in Ranka
Gangtok, June 18(IPR): The success of the State Government's flagship environmental initiative, Mero Rukh Mero Santati (MRMS), was once again reflected at Malangthang under Ranka Block, where a birthday celebration was organised in honour of young Layseme Rai, daughter of Shri Satish Rai and Smt. Binita Rai, at the family's MRMS plantation site.
The programme was attended by officials from Ranka Block, field staff and fellow beneficiaries, who joined the family in celebrating the occasion while also reviewing the progress of the plantation nurtured under the scheme.
The event highlighted the unique concept of MRMS, which encourages families to plant and care for trees in the name of their children. By fostering a personal connection between beneficiaries and the plantations, the initiative has helped ensure higher survival rates of saplings and strengthened community participation in environmental conservation.
Since its launch, MRMS has emerged as a successful model of community-driven afforestation, contributing significantly to the expansion of green cover and biodiversity conservation across the State. Plantations established under the programme have matured steadily over the years, reflecting the commitment of beneficiary families and the sustained support provided by the Forest Department.
During the programme, participants carried out maintenance activities and inspected the growth of various tree species, including Machilus edulis, Spondias axillaris and Ficus spp. The healthy condition of the plantation underscored the effectiveness of the scheme and the dedication of the family in nurturing the trees.
Speaking on the occasion, officials noted that the annual observance of children's birthdays at plantation sites remains one of the distinctive features of the programme. The practice serves as a reminder of the parallel growth of both the children and the trees planted in their names, strengthening the sense of ownership and responsibility among beneficiaries.
The celebration at Malangthang stands as yet another example of the positive impact of MRMS in transforming environmental conservation into a people's movement. By encouraging families to actively participate in afforestation efforts, the initiative continues to create lasting environmental and social benefits for future generations.
