Pakyong, October 07 (IPR): A one-day learning and interactive programme on Fisheries Awareness and Knowledge Sharing, organised by the Fisheries Department, Pakyong District, was conducted at the Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) Parakha, today.
The programme aimed to educate students on the importance, scope and potential of fisheries and aquaculture, while encouraging them to explore the sector as a viable avenue for livelihood generation, entrepreneurship and sustainable development.
Addressing the gathering, District Fisheries Development Officer, Ms Gauri Mukhia, provided an overview of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and its various benefits and activities, including support for trout hatcheries, ornamental fish farming, trout raceways and hatcheries. She also highlighted other initiatives under PMMSY, including motorcycles with fish boxes, recreational fisheries and fish feed mills.
She further apprised the students of centrally sponsored activities aimed at supporting livelihoods, including the Group Accidental Insurance Scheme (GAIS), its coverage and claim benefits. She also elaborated on the Mukhya Mantri Matsya Utpadan Yojana (MMMUY) and the benefits available to farmers under the scheme; further she sensitised the students on the Sikkim Fisheries Acts and Rules, fishing licences and the factors contributing to the decline in fish populations.
Emphasising the ecological importance of fisheries and introducing various common fish species found in Sikkim, she stated that fish play a vital role in maintaining the balance of freshwater ecosystems by supporting aquatic food chains, contributing to water quality and sustaining the health of rivers and lakes.
