District-level Labour Day programme in Mangan raises awareness on labour laws

Mangan, May 1 (IPR): On the occasion of International Labour Day, a district-level awareness programme on labour laws for building and other construction workers was organised by the Sikkim Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board, Labour Department, at Zilla Bhawan today.
The programme was attended by Adhaksha Mr Kado Lepcha as the Chief Guest, in the presence of Up-Adhakshya Ms Sonam Kipa Bhutia, Convenor of the Labour Wing Mr DB Chettri, ADM Mangan Mr Pema Wangchen Namkarpa, DPO (Zilla) Mr Karma Thendup Bhutia, MEO MNP Mr Karzong Bhutia, councillors of MNP, Heads of Offices, officials of line departments, and construction workers from across the district.
Addressing the programme, the Chief Guest, Mr Kado Lepcha highlighted the significance of the day, underscoring the vital role played by workers in nation-building and overall development. He expressed his gratitude for their contribution to society and extended his wishes on the occasion. He also encouraged workers to register under the Building and Other Construction Workers (BOCW) Welfare Board to avail various benefits, including financial assistance, healthcare support, educational aid for children, maternity benefits, and insurance coverage.
Mr DB Chettri, in his address, appreciated the efforts of the organising department in recognising and empowering workers through such initiatives. He emphasised the need for greater awareness and participation so that workers can fully benefit from welfare schemes and secure their livelihoods.
Earlier, an inspector from the Labour Department Mr Dev Narayan Pradhan, briefed the gathering on the significance of International Labour Day.
Deputy Labour Commissioner Mr Karma Sonam Tenzing Bhutia, in his address, elaborated on the importance of obtaining BOCW registration and cards and highlighted the various welfare measures provided by both the State and Central Governments.
Inspector Ms Tshering Norkey Bhutia also addressed the gathering, speaking on the Child Labour Act and the Sexual Harassment Act, stressing the importance of safeguarding workers’ rights and ensuring a safe and dignified working environment.
The programme also featured cultural performances and a group song presented by students of St Joseph School, Mangan and North Sikkim Academy, Mangan.
The event concluded with a renewed emphasis on the dignity of labour and the need to recognise, protect, and support the workforce, whose contributions remain fundamental to the growth and progress of society.
