District-level Intercollege Disaster Risk Reduction Quiz Concludes in Pakyong
Pakyong, September 12 (IPR): The district-level finals of the State Intercollege Quiz Competition on Disaster Risk Reduction 2024, organised by the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) under the Land Revenue and Disaster Management Department, Government of Sikkim, concluded on September 11 at Government College, Rhenock, for the districts of Mangan, Gangtok and Pakyong.
A total of 13 colleges and universities from the three districts took part in the competition, which comprised a written preliminary round followed by a stage quiz for the finalists. Six colleges qualified for the stage round, and among them, Harkamaya College of Education, Sikkim Government College, Rhenock, and Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences secured their places in the grand finale to be held at Chintan Bhawan, Gangtok, on September 16, 2025.
The Chief Guest, Zilla Upadhyaksha of Pakyong District, Ms Prabha Pradhan Chettri praised the initiative of the department in engaging students through an interactive platform to spread awareness on disaster management. She also encouraged students to actively contribute towards preparedness and inspire peers to understand their roles and responsibilities in disaster risk reduction.
ADC Pakyong, Mr GL Meena IAS, addressed the gathering on disaster preparedness and motivated students to play a proactive role. Additional Secretary, Land Revenue and Disaster Management Department, Ms Parina Gurung, highlighted the objective of the quiz, stressing the importance of pre-disaster awareness among youth so they are better equipped to respond during emergencies.
The event was attended by district officials including OSD, Sikkim State Lotteries; Mr Santosh Pradhan; OSD, IT Department; Mr Boom Tshering Yonzon, and OSD to the Hon’ble MLA, Rhenock Constituency, Mr DB Chettri and District Project Officer, Mr TR Chettri.
