District-Level World TB Day Observed under Pakyong District
Pakyong, March 24 (IPR): The District-Level World Tuberculosis Day 2026 celebration, organised by the State Tuberculosis Cell, Health and Family Welfare Department, under the theme “Yes, We Can End TB: Led by Countries, Powered by People,” was observed at the Rural Complex, Pakyong today.
World TB Day is observed globally on March 24 to raise awareness about the causes, symptoms, prevention and treatment of tuberculosis. The occasion also marked the launch of the second phase of the 100-Day TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan campaign.
During the programme, ADC (Development), Pakyong, Mr Sangay Gyatso Bhutia urged the attendees to utilise their knowledge of tuberculosis to spread awareness and help eliminate the social stigma surrounding the disease. He further emphasised the need for collective efforts to combat TB and to create a safe and supportive environment for all.
Additionally, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Pakyong, Dr Madan Mani Dhakal shed light on the selection criteria for the best-performing GPUs and appreciated the active participation of Panchayat members in disseminating awareness at the grassroots level. He then highlighted the use of advanced technologies for early detection and diagnosis of TB in the district along with measures for its eradication.
Likewise, Joint Director, Education Department, Ms Poonam Pradhan, stressed the importance of adhering to proper medication and adopting healthy eating habits for effective prevention and recovery.
District TB Officer, Pakyong, Dr Sandhya Rai, informed on the significance of World Tuberculosis Day, highlighting initiatives focused on early detection, complete treatment, social support and eliminating stigma. She also presented a brief overview of the district’s efforts and annual progress in combating tuberculosis.
During the programme, 22 TB GPUs under Pakyong District were felicitated across three categories—Bronze, Silver, and Gold, followed by presentation of tokens of appreciation to the best-performing PHC, PHSC, along with health workers and supporting staff in recognition of their contributions to the healthcare sector.
The event also featured an Intensified Case Finding (ICF) Camp under the TB-Free initiative, offering screening for active TB cases, awareness on latent TB infection, TB preventive treatment and NCD screening.
The programme was attended by Deputy Director-cum-Social Welfare Officer, Women, Child, Senior Citizen and Divyangjan Welfare Department, Mrs Dikit Lepcha; District Information Officer, Information and Public Relations Department, Ms Deeki D Bhutia, along with healthcare officials and staff.
