District-Level School Games 2026 Conclude In Gyalshing
Gyalshing, September 29 (IPR): The District-Level School Games 2026, organised by the Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Gyalshing District, concluded today at the P.M. Shri Pelling Senior Secondary School playground, marking the culmination of a week-long series of competitions in various sporting disciplines.
The games, which commenced on September 21, featured Archery, Athletics, Boxing, Kabaddi, Karate, Kho-Kho, Table Tennis and Taekwondo in the Under-17 and Under-19 categories. The competitions provided school students from across Gyalshing District an opportunity to participate in organised sporting activities, compete at the district level and showcase their skills.
District Collector, Gyalshing, Mr Tenzing D. Denzongpa, attended the closing ceremony as the Chief Guest, accompanied by DIO, IPRD, Gyalshing, Mr Rajen Tamang; Additional Director, Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Gyalshing, Ms Nikjey Lhamu Bhutia; Deputy Directors and Assistant Directors of the Department from across the district; Physical Education Teachers and instructors from participating schools; departmental officials, coaches, sports personnel and participating students.
The concluding programme also featured the felicitation of sports achievers, including Mr Amar Subba, Marathon Man of Sikkim; Mr Gopal Subba, Coach-cum-President, Gyalshing District Kick-Boxing Association; and Mr Biraj Subba, Social Worker and Sports Coordinator-cum-Convenor, in recognition of their achievements and contributions to the field of sports.
Promising young sportspersons from the district were also recognised for their achievements and potential. Ms Sani Hangma Subba and Mr Navin Limbu in Boxing, and Mr Aniwesh Dahal and Mr Anugraha Rai in Taekwondo, were honoured during the programme.
The culmination day featured competitions in various track and field events, including 100-metre, 200-metre, 400-metre, 800-metre and 1500-metre races, long jump, shot put and 4×100-metre relay for boys and girls. The finals of team events, including Kho-Kho and Kabaddi, were also conducted as part of the district-level games. A kick-boxing sparring demonstration was presented by students of the Kick-Boxing Association of Rungdu, Lower Bermiok, Gyalshing District.
The District-Level School Games are part of the Department’s efforts to encourage greater participation in sports among school students, promote discipline and team spirit, and provide opportunities for young athletes to develop their abilities and progress to higher levels of competition.
The programme concluded with the distribution of medals and certificates to the winners and participants.
