District-Level National Sports Day Celebration at Pakyong

Pakyong, 29 August (IPR): The Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Pakyong District, organised an array of commemorative events and sports activities to mark the district-level National Sports Day 2024 at St Xavier's School Ground today.
The significance of National Sports Day lies in its annual tribute to the legendary hockey icon, Major Dhyan Chand, whose remarkable prowess on the field earned him the title of one of the greatest hockey players in history.
The celebratory commenced with the recitation of the FIT India pledge, administered by the chief guest, Dr Netra Thapa, Chief Consultant and Head of Department of Psychiatry at STNM Hospital.
The event unfolded with a series of engaging activities, showcasing the diverse talent and passion for sports within the community.
Some of the highlights included the Chief Minister's One Mile Run, as well as the Junior Boy's Futsal Final.
Likewise, the Inter-School Girl's Futsal competition and Futsal competition between Pakyong Education Department and Pakyong District Sports Association brought together individuals from various sporting backgrounds.
In a demonstration of martial arts finesse, the Pakyong Tae Kwon Do Association displayed their skills with a captivating Tae Kwon Do showcase.
Mr Nim Dorjee Bhutia, Deputy Director, Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, took a moment to reflect on Major Dhyan Chand's indelible contributions to the world of sports, underscoring the importance of sports in promoting not only physical health but also unity and camaraderie among individuals.
The event also paid tribute to Mr Sunil Limbu for his achievements in the realm of Tae Kwon Do, recognising his dedication and excellence in the sport.
The participation of students from various schools added an element to the celebration, with young athletes from Dikling Senior Secondary School, Pachey Senior Secondary School, and St Xavier's School.
As the event drew to a close, participants and attendees were honoured with prizes and accolades, acknowledging their efforts and sportsmanship throughout the day.
Also present were Mr SP Bhutia, DFO (T) cum President, Pakyong Football Association; Mr BK Dhamala, DFO Social Forestry cum President, Pakyong Cricket Association; Mr Robert Lepcha, Assistant Director Department of Sports and Youth Affairs; Mr Manoj Gurung, Assistant Director Department of Sports and Youth Affairs; Mr Hemant Gurung, Secretary Pickleball Association of Sikkim; Mr Chumbi Bhutia, General Secretary, Pakyong United Sporting Club, police personnel, teachers, students, along with staff from the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs.
