District-Level 80th Independence Day Celebration Held at Pakyong
Pakyong, August 15 (IPR): Pakyong District joined the nation in celebrating the 80th Independence Day as the district-level programme held at St. Xavier’s School Ground, Pakyong.
The celebration was graced by Minister for Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services and Fisheries Development Departments cum MLA Chujachen, Mr Puran Kumar Gurung as the Chief Guest.
The chief guest was accompanied by Ms Zilla Adhyaksha Ms Laden Lhamu Bhutia; Zilla Upadhyaksha, Ms Prabha Pradhan; Additional Political Secretary to the HCM, Mr Bishal Sharma; Chairperson, Commerce & Industries Department, Ms Nim Chiki Sherpa; Chairman, Department of Panchayati Raj, Mr BB Chettri; Chairman, Transport Department, Mr Y T Lepcha; District Collector, Pakyong, Ms Pari Bishnoi; Superintendent of Police, Pakyong, Mr Tshering Sherpa; ADC (HQ), Pakyong, Mr Sabindra Rai; ADC (Dev), Pakyong, Mr Sangay Gyasto Bhutia; SDM (HQ), Mr Thendup Lepcha; SDM, Pakyong, Mr Nilkhanta Bhandari; OSD, MLA Namcheybung, Mr Hari Rizal and OSD, Water Resources, Mr Gagan Gurung.
Upon his arrival, the Chief Guest was accorded a ceremonial welcome, followed by the National Song. He hoisted the National Flag, followed by the National Anthem and Guard of Honour by the Police Department, Pakyong.
The programme included a March Past by contingents from various schools, NCC, Scouts and Guides, with competitive and non-competitive categories and a band display.
District Collector, Pakyong, Ms Pari Bishnoi, read out the Independence Day message of the Governor of Sikkim, Mr Om Prakash Mathur. ADC (HQ), Pakyong, Mr Sabindra Rai, thereafter read out the Independence Day message of Chief Minister of Sikkim, Mr Prem Singh Tamang.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Guest extended his warm greetings to the gathering on the occasion of 80th Independence Day. He highlighted the significance of the occasion, particularly as Sikkim marked 50 years of statehood and reflected on the State’s journey and progress over the years.
He spoke about the Government’s efforts towards strengthening specialised healthcare services in the State and highlighted the commencement of kidney transplantation services in Sikkim, noting that the Chief Minister, had described the commencement of kidney transplantation in the State as a historic milestone achieved on the 80th Independence Day. He appreciated the initiative and expressed his gratitude for the continued efforts towards strengthening specialised healthcare services in Sikkim.
The Chief Guest also expressed his gratitude to the Chief Minister for the announcement to upgrade the existing Rhenock Hospital into a 100-bedded facility, noting that the initiative would further benefit the people of the region.
Highlighting key welfare initiatives of the State Government, he spoke about the Sikkim Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana and Aama Sahayog Yojana, aimed at extending support to mothers, particularly non-working and unemployed mothers. He also highlighted the Shravan Kumar Award, introduced to recognise sons and daughters of Sikkim for their selfless service and care towards their parents, drawing inspiration from the values associated with Shravan Kumar.
Emphasising the importance of the younger generation, he stated that youth are the future of State and called upon them to contribute positively towards the development and progress of Sikkim.
Referring to Pakyong’s transition from a sub-division to a district, he noted that the change had brought administrative services closer to the people and made access to government services more convenient. He further observed that Pakyong district had been witnessing growth across various sectors and appreciated the continued development taking place in the district.
He also commended the organising committee involved in the district-level Independence Day celebration for conducting the programme in a grand and befitting manner.
He concluded by calling for continued collective efforts towards the progress and development of Sikkim and Pakyong district.
The programme included the presentation of the Shravan Kumar Award under the Rural Development Department, with 27 beneficiaries recognised for their care and support towards their parents.
Various awards and letters of appreciation were also presented during the programme.
Under the Administration category, a Letter of Appreciation was presented to Sub-Divisional Magistrate (HQ), Pakyong, Mr Thendup Lepcha.
Ms Arpana Gurung, SIA, IPRD, received appreciation under the Sports Department category.
Under the District Meritorious Award for Non-Gazetted Employees, the following employees were recognised:

Among the Class XII CBSE toppers were Avas Sheshan Tamang (Science), PM SHRI Rangpo SSS; Holika Rai (Humanities), PM SHRI Rhenock SSS; Dikshya Basnett (Commerce), PM SHRI Rangpo SSS; and Supriya Manger (Vocational), Namcheybong SSS.
From the ICSE Class XII category, Gauri Sundas (Science) and Shiva Shanker Bhattarai (Humanities) from St. Xavier’s School, Pakyong, were felicitated.
The Class X toppers recognised included Shilpi Prasad from PM SHRI Rhenock SSS under CBSE and Kingjl Maple Poudyal from St. Xavier’s School, Pakyong, under ICSE.
