District Collector Inspects Chochenpheri Barapathing Landslide Site Following Torrential Rainfall
Pakyong, July 31 (IPR): District Collector of Pakyong, Mr Rohan Agawane, conducted a ground inspection of the Chochenpheri-Barapathing NHIDCL road area today, where a significant landslide occurred following heavy and continuous rainfall on 29th July. The landslide caused damage to a section of the road and surrounding land, prompting concern for the safety and mobility of residents in the affected zone.
The inspection team included Zilla Panchayat members from Chochenpheri GPU, Additional District Collector Pakyong, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Pakyong, District Project Officer and representatives from the Nalanda team.
The joint visit was part of an immediate response strategy initiated by the district administration to assess the impact of the landslide and determine further action to mitigate risks in the area.
Panchayat President and Ward Panchayat of Chochenpheri, Assistant Engineer from Zilla, landowners affected by the slide, and local residents were present during the inspection. Officials interacted with residents to gather on-ground information regarding the sequence of events and the extent of damage to private and public property.
Preliminary assessments revealed substantial soil displacement along the affected stretch of the NHIDCL road. The movement of debris has obstructed access routes, disrupted local mobility, and posed potential hazards for adjoining households and agricultural plots, resulting in partial damage to a few structures and road surfaces.
District Collector instructed instructed NHIDCL officials and local contractor to initiate immediate remedial measures. These include clearing debris, assessing road stability, conducting geotechnical evaluations, and installing temporary barriers to prevent further sliding. The Assistant Engineer was directed to prepare a detailed report on the current condition of the site and propose a long-term slope management strategy to prevent recurrent erosion or landslides.
During the inspection, public concerns related to future risks, road repair timelines, and safety measures were noted. Landowners whose properties have experienced direct impact will be provided assistance under disaster response norms. The District Collector assured the residents that preventive steps will be prioritised and coordinated across relevant departments.
The administration has urged citizens to remain cautious, avoid venturing near unstable slopes, and report any signs of land cracks, slope shifts, or water seepage to local authorities.
