District Authorities Inspect Commercial Units at Deorali Bazaar
Gangtok, February 27 (IPR): Additional District Magistrate, Gangtok, Mr Sisum Wangchuk Bhutia, along with SDPO, Gangtok, Mr Mingyur Tempo Nadik, and officers from various line departments, conducted a joint inspection at Deorali Bazaar today.
The objective of the inspection was to ensure that the general public is provided with safe food, regulated trade practices and a secure environment, along with the protection of workers’ rights and compliance with statutory provisions.
The inspection covered various commercial units, including a petrol pump, restaurants and fast food outlets. The establishments were inspected for compliance with the provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003, governing the advertisement, trade, production, supply and distribution of tobacco products under the Act. The inspection particularly focused on the prohibition of advertisement of tobacco products, display of statutory health warnings, restrictions on sale to minors, prohibition of sale within 100 yards of educational institutions and regulation of public smoking in notified public places, as mandated under the Act.
The establishments were also examined for compliance with relevant provisions of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and the Packaged Commodities Rules, 2011. The inspection included verification of the accuracy and stamping of weighing and measuring instruments, proper display of quantity and price, declaration of net weight, date of manufacture and maximum retail price on packaged commodities, and adherence to standards to prevent unfair trade practices. Compliance with food safety regulations prescribed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India was also verified. Trade licence, food licence and fire safety certificate were examined to ensure that all documents were valid and updated in accordance with prescribed norms.
During the inspection, the officers interacted with managers and business owners regarding staff strength, salary structure, working hours, provision of holidays, insurance coverage and fire safety measures. The establishments were advised to strictly adhere to labour laws, fire safety norms and other statutory requirements, and to maintain all necessary documents in updated condition.
The inspection team included Assistant Labour Commissioner, Gangtok, Mr Suman Subba, Deputy Commissioner, Excise Department, Mr C N Sharma, Senior Bazaar Inspector, GMC, Mr Suman Subba, along with police officers, inspectors and officials from various line departments.
