Disaster Response Team Undergoes Week-long Training on Basic First Aid and Medical Care in Namchi

Namchi, September 29 (IPR): A week-long training programme on ‘Basic First Aid and Medical Care’ for the Disaster Management and Quick Response Team (QRT), Namchi, commenced today at the Conference Hall of District Hospital, Namchi.
Addressing the participants, ADC (HQ) Namchi Mr Subash Ghimirey, urged them to take the training seriously and acquire accurate information and practical skills, emphasising that members of the team would serve as among the first responders during emergencies and disasters.
He encouraged the participants to actively engage in the upcoming sessions and make the most of the training programme. He further urged them to disseminate the knowledge and skills gained during the training among their colleagues and communities, thereby contributing towards strengthening disaster preparedness and awareness at the grassroots level.
The first-day session was conducted by Consultant Ophthalmologist, Dr Tshering Wanchuk Bhutia, who briefed the participants on the nature of disasters, which may be either natural or man-made, and highlighted the importance of understanding basic medical care during emergencies.
Focusing on eye-related emergencies, he @explained that the eye is among the most sensitive parts of the human body and requires immediate and appropriate care in the event of an injury. He provided essential information on common eye-related problems and demonstrated basic first-aid measures that can be administered before specialised medical assistance becomes available.
He highlighted irrigation as the first line of management in eye-related emergencies, noting that timely irrigation can provide immediate relief and help minimise the risk of further complications. He also stressed the importance of reassuring and calming the patient before administering first aid.
Following immediate first-aid measures, he advised that the patient should be taken to the nearest hospital or healthcare facility for further evaluation and treatment, preferably within 24 hours, to prevent possible complications or infection.
He also demonstrated the appropriate use of padded bandages moistened with suitable fluid, stressing that the pad should be adequately moistened before being placed over the affected eye.
The training programme is aimed at strengthening the practical knowledge and first-response capabilities of the Disaster Management and Quick Response Team, enabling its members to respond effectively and provide timely assistance during emergencies.
