Department of Sports and Youth Affairs Organises State Level School Games 2025

Gangtok, November 16 (IPR): The State Level School Games 2025, organised by the Sports and Youth Affairs Department, commenced at Reshithang, Khel Gaon, today.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by Minister, Sports and Youth Affairs, Education, and Law and Parliamentary Affairs Departments, Mr Raju Basnet, as the Chief Guest.
A total of 700 students from all six districts are participating in the event.
Addressing the gathering, Minister of the Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Mr Raju Basnet reiterated the State Government’s commitment to strengthening the sports sector and highlighted the Chief Minister’s vision of developing world-class sports facilities. He also outlined the objectives of the School Games and expressed his appreciation to all the young participants.
In her welcome address, Secretary, Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Ms Yangchen D Tamang highlighted the primary objective of the games, which is to identify and nurture young sporting talent. She emphasised that the State Level School Games serve as a platform for athletes to advance to national level competitions. She presented the school games report, highlighted the participation of around 700 athletes, and conveyed her appreciation to Chief Minister Mr Prem Singh Tamang for strengthening sports infrastructure in the State.
The opening ceremony featured a march past by the participating athletes, followed by the administration of the oath by National Level Athlete Ms Rewa Baraily and the ceremonial lighting of the torch.
The Chief Guest formally declared the State Level School Games 2025 open.
The competitions have been categorised into the following disciplines:
Track events:
•100 metres race
•200 metres race
•800 metres race
•1500 metres race
•4×100 metres relay
Field events:
• Long jump
• Shot put
• Javelin throw
• Archery
• Table Tennis
• Basketball
• Kabaddi
• Kho Kho
• Taekwondo
Also present were Zilla Panchayat and Panchayat Members, Advisor, Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Mr Bikram Pradhan, Chairman, State Sports Development Board, Mr Rinzing Wangyal Chopel, Chairman, State Youth Development Board, Mr Basant Yonzon, Secretary, Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Ms Yangchen D Tamang, along with other dignitaries.
The Vote of Thanks was delivered by Additional Director, Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Mr R B Biswakarma.
