DST in collaboration with ISRO and NESAC organises early celebration of National Space Day
Gangtok, July 29 (IPR): The Sikkim State Council of Science and Technology, Department of Science and Technology (DST) in collaboration with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) and Department of Space, Government of India, celebrated a preliminary event for National Space Day under the theme ‘Touching Lives While Touching the Moon: India's Space Saga’ at Chintan Bhawan, Gangtok today.
The programme was graced by Dr Sandeep Tambe, Secretary DST, Dr Shamrao, Scientist/ Engineer ISRO, Dr Dhruval Bhavsar, Scientist/ Engineer NESAC, Dr Haobam Suchitra Devi, Scientist/ Engineer NESAC, Mr D G Shrestha, Principal Director DST, Mr D T Bhutia Principal Director DST, Ms Baby Mukhia Additional Secretary, DST, other dignitaries and school and college students from across the state.
In his address, Chief Guest Dr Sandeep Tambe, Secretary DST, stated that through celebrating National Space Day, space technology can be popularised to foster curiosity in the minds of the future generation. He added that India’s successful landing of Chandrayaan -3 was due to the collective effort and determination of scientists, engineers, technicians and politicians of India.
He emphasised that there are two challenges that the youth of Sikkim face today: climate change / global warming and growth of bacterial and fungal disease in the state which is hampering in the production of cash crops.
He ended his address by stating that through the achievement of landing of Chandrayaan-3, India has emerged as one of the top leaders in space technology in the world.
The programme featured different technical sessions about Chandrayaan-3 and satellite data.
Invited speaker Dr Shamrao, spoke about the vision of India's space programme, the configuration of Chandrayaan-3, the science behind the technology of Chandrayaan-3 etc. Dr Shamrao further explained the trials and tests that the space craft was put through in order to achieve India's first soft moon landing. He stated that "the stature of India has increased after the moon landing."
In the second Technical Session, Mr DG Shrestha, Principal Director DST, spoke about satellite data and how space application can be used for societal benefit. He emphasised the importance of satellite data by giving the example of ‘vulnerable lakes.’ He stated that there was no existence of small lakes above Gurudongmar Lake in 1941 but due to the melting of glaciers, formation of these lakes have taken place. Mr Shrestha also declared that there are more than 300 lakes in Sikkim- out of which 16 lakes have been categorised as vulnerable lakes through satellite data.
He further articulated that the data could help in the fields of agriculture and soil studies, forest and environment and land use/ land cover change.
The third technical session was an audio visual presentation by the NESAC Exhibition Team. The videos featured snippets of the triumphant voyage of Chandrayaan-3, Prime Minister Modi’s reaction to the moon landing, and vignettes of India’s technological advancement and resilience.
The programme ended with a quiz on space related affairs for the participating schools. The 2nd Runner Up Prize was awarded to P M Shri Deorali Government Girls Senior Secondary School, the 1st Runner Up Prize was awarded to Sir Tashi Namgyal Senior Secondary School and the First Prize was bagged by Modern Government Senior Secondary School.
Earlier the programme was addressed by Ms. Baby Mukhia , Additional Secretary , DST, Government of Sikkim. The vote of thanks was delivered by Ms Pema Zangmu Lepcha , ASO, DST.
