DC Soreng Chairs Meeting on Proposed Mental Health Project in District
Soreng, March 9 (IPR): District Collector Soreng Mr Dhiraj Subedi, chaired a preliminary meeting regarding the proposed Mental Health Project in Soreng District at District Administrative Centre (DAC), Soreng, today.
The meeting aimed to deliberate in detail on the implementation framework, operational planning and coordination mechanisms for the effective rollout of the project at the district level.
During the meeting, the house discussed conducting mental health awareness and counselling camps across the district, case finding related to mental health and providing treatment for individuals suffering from mental health illnesses. The discussion also focused on capacity building of NGO personnel and local volunteers to help identify individuals with mental health concerns, guide them appropriately and create awareness in each Gram Panchayat Unit (GPU). The provision of medication to patients was also emphasised.
Dr. Manoj Kumar, Clinical Director, Mental Health Action Trust (MHAT), Kerala, gave a brief overview of MHAT and explained how the organisation works to address mental health-related issues. He then sought information on the district’s health system, particularly focusing on various aspects of mental health disorders.
During the discussion, the DC informed about several mental health concerns affecting the district, including online gaming addiction, substance abuse, broken marriages and other related issues. He also mentioned the “Swasth Maan” initiative being implemented in Sikkim under Sikkim INSPIRES.
Dr. Manoj Kumar proposed clinical mental health services in four Primary Health Centres (PHCs) of the district, to be conducted four days a week, along with training sessions for health department representatives.
Further, the DC urged for active participation of Panchayats in the project to help identify individuals dealing with mental illness and informed that the project will function under the aegis of NITI Aayog.
The meeting was attended by Panchayats, ADC (Soreng) Mr DR Bista, SDM (Soreng) Ms Sakchum Lepcha, CAO Mr Bishnu Adhikari, CMO (Soreng) Dr. Smriti Rai, CEO (Education) Mr Tenzing Dorjee Bhutia, Psychiatrist Dr. Yangtsila Dorjee, Counsellors (Health Department) Ms Yamuna Dhungel and Ms Rinku Rai, Director, IT (MHAT) Mr Sajan R and other representatives from various line departments.
