Cooperation Department Observes International Cooperative Day 2025 with Plantation Drive
Gangtok, July 5 (IPR):
The Cooperation Department, Government of Sikkim, organised a plantation drive at Selep Tanki, Bulbuley, today to commemorate the International Day of Cooperatives 2025.
Minister for Cooperation and Rural Development Department, Mr Arun Kumar Upreti, graced the occasion as the chief guest.
This year’s global theme, “Cooperatives: Driving Inclusive and Sustainable Solutions for a Better World”, was observed through the plantation drive conducted under the national and State-level initiatives, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam and Mero Rukh Mero Santati.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Mr Arun Kumar Upreti informed that the Cooperation Department is undertaking plantation drives across all districts of the State under the nationwide campaign Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam. He stated that the department has set a target to plant several thousand saplings, thereby promoting environmental consciousness and honouring the essence of motherhood.
He also highlighted the significance of the State initiative Mero Rukh Mero Santati, under which a sapling was symbolically planted for a child, Miss Prachetna Cintury. The gesture symbolised the intergenerational bond and the commitment to ecological preservation. The Minister commended the efforts of the officers and staff of the Cooperation Department for the successful implementation of the programme.
Secretary, Cooperation Department, Ms Gloria Namchu, in her address, stated that July 5 is globally observed as the International Day of Cooperatives (CoopsDay), aimed at raising awareness about the cooperative model and its role in sustainable development. She emphasised that cooperatives foster community-led progress, ecological awareness, and intergenerational responsibility.
She further informed that July 6 also marks the 3rd Foundation Day of the Ministry of Cooperation, Government of India, and the entire week, July 1 to July 6, is being celebrated across the country with the observance of Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam and Mero Rukh Mero Santati. These initiatives promote environmental sustainability and strengthen intergenerational ties through active community participation.
The programme emphasised the importance of environmental sustainability and honouring familial bonds, echoing the cooperative spirit that aims to build a better, greener future.
Also present on the occasion were Principal Registrar Cooperation Department, Managing Directors of Sikkim Milk Union Ltd., SIMFED, and Denzong Agricultural Cooperative Society Ltd. (DACS), Executive Director of Sikkim Consumers Cooperative Society Ltd., Chief Executive Officer of SICUN Assam Lingzey, General Manager of SISCO Bank, along with other dignitaries, officers, and staff of the Cooperation Department.
