Date: 06-Oct-2024
Siliguri, October 6 (IPR):
In a pivotal coordination meeting, the Chief Minister Mr Prem Singh Tamang emphasized the urgent need to address the demand for tribal status for left-out Nepali communities in Sikkim and West Bengal. The meeting, attended by representatives and dignitaries from both Sikkim and West Bengal, focused on ensuring socio-political recognition and benefits for these left-out communities.
The Chief Minister acknowledged the efforts of MPs Mr DT Lepcha, Dr Indra Hang Subba, and Mr Raju Bista in raising this issue in Parliament. He proposed forming a Joint Action Committee between West Bengal and Sikkim to strengthen the movement and called for a comprehensive infographic report to present the case effectively to the Centre.
He expressed confidence in the positive outlook of the Central Government under Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi and urged unity in advocating for the rightful recognition of these communities.
In response, all three MPs stressed the importance of raising this issue under the able guidance and leadership of Chief Minister Mr Prem Singh Tamang. They also highlighted their commitment to addressing all legal aspects and preparing the necessary documentation to strengthen their case, with the goal of achieving success in this matter as soon as possible.
Representatives from the affected communities, alongside key stakeholders, presented their case, highlighting the rich historical and cultural identities of these groups and the ongoing social and economic challenges they face due to their exclusion from the list of recognized tribes.
Senior government officials and leaders engaged in discussions on the roadmap for their inclusion. Experts and legal advisors also contributed valuable insights, emphasizing the need for updated population data, historical evidence, and cultural documentation to support the case for tribal status.
The meeting led to a fruitful outcome, wherein two committees were formed which have members from both Sikkim and West Bengal, which will now work on all aspects of the issue before finalising the documents to be presented in the Centre.
