Chief Justice of Sikkim visits State Central Prison at Rongyek
Gangtok, September 25 (IPR): Chief Justice Mr Justice Biswanath Somadder paid a visit to State Central Prison here at Rongyek, today.
Upon his arrival, the Chief Justice was accorded a warm welcome by Secretary (Protocol) Home Department Ms Benu Gurung, District Collector Gangtok Mr Tushar G Nikhare, DIG State Central Prison (SCP) Sikkim Police Mr ST Tonyont, Additional SP SCP Ms Sabitri Pradhan and Officers from various line departments.
The Chief Justice interacted with the prisoners during his visit and discussed on various issues concerning improvements for the inmates. During the interaction, the Chief Justice urged everyone to use the precise nomenclature of correctional centres/homes instead of jails/prisons concerning places where inmates are kept. The introduction of computers was discussed towards giving holistic rehabilitation to the inmates once they return to the society.
During the course of the programme, a total number of six inmates were rewarded for their good behaviour.
At the outset of the visit, the Chief Justice also visited the prison area wherein he took note of legal aid clinic, dispensary, library, prison cells, prison salon, inmates kitchen, Bamboo and Carving section for prisoners.
During the course of his visit, the Chief Justice instructed Secretary (Protocol) Home Department, DC Gangtok and DIG State Central Prison to make various improvements such as improvement of health facilities, food quality and road in and around the prison.
The day saw the presence of Learned Registrar General High Court of Sikkim Mr Prajwal Khatiwada, Learned Principal District and Session Judge Gangtok High Court of Sikkim Mr KW Bhutia, Learned Judicial Officers and Prison Officers.
