Career Counselling and Mobilisation Programme Held at Soreng
Soreng, July 17, (IPR): A Career Counselling-cum-Mobilisation programme under the Sikkim Inspires initiative was organised at Rurban Complex, Soreng, today. The programme was jointly organised by the State Institute of Capacity Building (SICB), Skill Development Department, Government of Sikkim, in collaboration with the District Administrative Centre (DAC), Soreng.
The session aimed to create awareness among the youth on skill development initiatives, career pathways, entrepreneurship, employment prospects and the support services available under the Sikkim Inspires initiative.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Assistant Director, Mrs Kusum Pradhan, who outlined the objectives of the session and expressed hope that the participants would gain valuable insights to make informed career decisions.
Delivering the opening presentation, Project Officer, SICB, Mr Arun Mukhia, gave an overview of the diverse training opportunities offered through the various directorates and institutions under the Skill Development Department (SDD). He also highlighted the Sikkim Inspires initiative, which focuses on empowering women, youth and NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) through skill development, entrepreneurship and employment support. The initiative is guided by Skill Gap Assessment Studies (SGAS), which identify local workforce demands to ensure that training programmes are aligned with industry requirements and enhance employment prospects. He further elaborated on the eligibility criteria, course duration and the range of programmes available, while emphasising that trainees receive continuous support from enrolment to placement.
Project Officer, SICB, Mr Anil Sharma, presented the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY), describing it as a flagship skill training and placement initiative of the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. He shared the objectives of the scheme, highlighted its free, industry-aligned training with placement support, and showcased success stories of beneficiaries along with the courses offered.
Speaking on the Sikkim Inspires initiative, Consultant (TSA), Ms Akanksha Gupta, briefed the gathering on the training programmes available for youth between 18 and 35 years of age, outlining the eligibility criteria, available courses and employment prospects.
Young Professional (YP), Mr Sudham Sharma, introduced the National Career Service (NCS) Platform, explaining its registration process, services and employment support. He also informed the gathering about the offline Model Career Centre (MCC) at Jorethang, which provides in-person career counselling, job matching, registration assistance and guidance to job seekers.
Addressing the gathering, Principal, Industrial Training Institute (ITI), Mr M.N. Bhutia, stressed the importance of skill-based education in meeting the growing demand for skilled manpower. He informed the students that ITI programmes are open to candidates from 14 years of age, depending on the trade, and encouraged them to explore vocational and long-term technical courses. He also spoke on the vision behind the establishment of the Skill Development Department and its role in enhancing employability.
Thereafter, District Child Protection Officer (DCPO), Soreng, Ms TM Sharma, thanked the State Institute of Capacity Building for organising the session and encouraged the students to make the best use of the opportunities presented.
An interactive open discussion followed, during which students received counselling and guidance from the resource persons to help them make informed choices based on their interests and career aspirations.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Mr Samir Tamang, who expressed gratitude to the organisers, resource persons, District Administration and participants for contributing to the successful conduct of the programme.
