Awareness Programme on Single-Use Plastic Ban and Plastic Waste Management Held at Rhenock BAC
Pakyong, May 27 (IPR): An awareness cum sensitisation programme on the Ban on Single-Use Plastic (SUP) and training on the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, along with subsequent amendments and the online reporting mechanism, was organised by the Pakyong District Zilla Panchayat (PDZP), in collaboration with the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) and Rural Development Department (RDD), at Rhenock BAC today.
The event was graced by Zilla Upadhyaksha Mrs Prabha Pradhan as the Chief Guest in the presence of ADC (Development ), Mr Sangay Gyatso Bhutia; OSD to MLA Rhenock Constituency, Mr DB Chettri; DPO Zilla, Mr Sonam Zangpo Bhutia and BDO Rhenock, Mr RK Gurung.
Addressing the gathering, Zilla Upadhyaksha, Mrs Prabha Pradhan highlighted the growing environmental concerns caused by single-use plastics and stressed the importance of adopting sustainable alternatives for waste disposal practices.
She then highlighted on the issue of industrial waste and emphasised on the need for better waste management practices and underscored the importance of preserving natural resources for future generations, further urging for collective efforts and coordination among departments and communities to contribute towards eliminating the issue of plastic pollution.
Additionally, ADC (Development), Mr Sangay Gyatso Bhutia stressed the need for awareness regarding the conservation of natural resources. He suggested preparing a proper roadmap for effective waste segregation and informed participants about their crucial role in implementing surveys and segregation processes. Further, he urged all concerned to ensure the timely submission of data and with utmost responsibility.
In his address, DPO Zilla, Mr Sonam Zangpo Bhutia emphasised that the objective of the programme is to create awareness on proper assessment, segregation and scientific management of plastic waste through active public participation across all blocks of the district.
The technical session was facilitated by JE, SPCB, Mr Pravash Chettri and Field Assistant, SPCB, Mr Reshav Sharma, who provided detailed information on the legal provisions and general awareness aspects related to plastic waste management, plastic packaging waste categorisation and parameters for waste classification.
The session also covered guidelines and regulations under the Plastic Waste Management Rules, including the duties and responsibilities of local bodies, institutions and the community. Emphasis was laid on waste segregation, systematic collection, recycling processes and safe disposal mechanisms for plastic waste.
A practical hands-on session on SUP characterisation was also conducted, during which participants received field-oriented training on the identification, classification and assessment of single-use plastic waste. The session also provided insights into segregation methods, assessment procedures and data collection techniques essential for efficient plastic waste management.
An interactive session was also held wherein attendees raised queries which were addressed by the officials.
Also present were Panchayats, officials from the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB), Block Coordinators SBM-G, PDAs and PAAs under Pakyong Division and staff members from various line departments.
