Awareness Programme on PMFBY Marks the 9th Crop Insurance Week in Pakyong.

An awareness programme on Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), as part of the 9th Crop Insurance Week celebration, was organised by the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), Pakyong, in coordination with the Agriculture and Horticulture Department, Pakyong, at the RURBAN Community Complex today.
Crop Insurance Week is a joint initiative of the Government of India and respective State Governments, aimed at spreading awareness about PMFBY among the farming community. The programme seeks to inform farmers about the importance of crop insurance and encourage enrolment under the scheme.
The programme was attended by the SDM Pakyong, Mr Dak Man Subba, as the Chief Guest. In his address, he emphasised the importance of maximising farmer enrolment under PMFBY in Pakyong District. He stated that issues related to crop damage must be effectively addressed and urged field functionaries to work diligently towards achieving higher enrolment targets. By enrolling under PMFBY, farmers will be able to claim compensation for crop loss due to natural calamities, helping them mitigate post-harvest financial setbacks.
Project Director-cum-Additional Director, Mr Tshering Chophel Bhutia, informed that the celebration of the 9th Crop Insurance Week officially commenced on July 1st and will continue until July 7th across all blocks in Pakyong District. He stated that the primary aim is to raise awareness among farmers about the benefits of crop insurance and to ensure no farmer is left uninformed. He lauded the efforts of field functionaries who have been actively supporting farmers and promoting the scheme at the grassroots level.
He reiterated that farmers are the backbone of the nation and that PMFBY is a vital tool in safeguarding their livelihoods from the financial consequences of natural disasters. He also encouraged officials to meet the enrolment target by July 15.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Project Director-cum-Deputy Director, Ms Rebecca Gurung, elaborated on the significance of the 9th Crop Insurance Week and highlighted the key objectives of the PMFBY. She explained that the scheme insures field crops against a range of risks, including yield losses due to natural calamities, thereby helping farmers claim financial support through insurance coverage.
She also provided insights into the claim settlement process and stressed the importance of increasing enrolment under the scheme. She informed that in the kharif season crops such as paddy, maize, soyabean, Green Gram, Millet and Ginger are covered under PMFBY. She urged farmers at the Block levels in Pakyong District to actively participate and enrol in the scheme.
Furthermore, Head of the Common Service Centre (CSC), Mr Amitabha Nandy, informed that CSCs are playing an essential role in supporting the implementation of PMFBY. He stated that CSCs assist farmers during the enrolment process and offer guidance in claim submissions following crop loss due to natural calamities. He assured that any issues arising during enrolment or claim processing are promptly addressed by the CSC teams.
Pakyong District In-Charge for PMFBY, Ms Dil Kumari Subba, highlighted the ongoing efforts to reach out to farmers who are still unaware of the scheme. She reiterated that PMFBY aims to ensure that no agricultural activity is discontinued due to natural disasters. She encouraged timely enrolment and stressed the importance of reporting crop damage within 72 hours to ensure claim eligibility.
The 9th Crop Insurance Week will continue across Pakyong District from July 1st to 7th, with awareness activities scheduled at the block level to ensure wider participation and benefit for the farming community.
The programme was also attended by Deputy Directors, Agriculture & Horticulture Department, Agricultural Development Officers, Sub-Divisional Officers, Assistant Technology Manager & Block Technology Manager under ATMA, along with farmers.
