Awareness Programme on PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana Held at Namchi Municipal Council

An awareness programme on the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and Model Solar Village initiative was held at Namchi Municipal Council (NMC) Hall, Namchi, today.
The event was organized by the Sikkim Renewable Energy Development Agency (SREDA) under the Power Department in collaboration with Namchi Municipal Council with the objective of educating citizens about the benefits and procedures of installing rooftop solar systems under the centrally sponsored scheme.
ACD(Namchi) Ms Trisang Tamang in her address, spoke about how the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana could play a key role in tackling issue such as misuse of electricity and further explained that by embracing this scheme, the public can help create a cleaner and healthier environment. In addition, she encouraged everyone present to adopt solar energy and make the most of the opportunities offered by the initiative.
Addressing, SREDA Director Mr Jeevan Thapa emphasized the urgent need to transition to renewable energy, especially in light of the increasing global temperatures and environmental degradation. He highlighted that the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which was approved by the Government of India aims to provide Central Financial Assistance (CFA) of up to ₹85,800 to eligible households for the installation of rooftop solar panels.
The scheme is set to be implemented nationwide until the financial year 2026–27 and will be facilitated through distribution companies (DISCOMs) and State Implementing Agencies (SIAs).
It may be mentioned here that the programme introduced the Model Solar Village initiative, under which one village per district will be selected and allocated ₹1 crore based on their efforts in solar energy adoption. Villages will be prepared to install solar systems under schemes such as PM Surya Ghar and PM-KUSUM.
During the session, attendees were informed about the eligibility criteria for the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, the benefits of solar adoption which included lower electricity bills, higher efficiency through grid integration, reduced carbon emissions, energy backup during shortages and low maintenance systems.
The event saw active participation from the public. Officials urged residents of Namchi to take full advantage of the scheme to make their homes and villages sustainable and energy-resilient.
Present during the meeting were Chairman NMC Mr Ganesh Rai, Vice-ChairpersonNMC Mrs Sabitri Tamang, Councillors of NMC Ms Nima Chuden Lepcha, Mr Pem Norbu Bhutia and Ms Mamta Kalikotey along with other officials from NMC and Power Department.
