Awareness Programme on Cooperatives reaches Sikkim Government College Mangshila
Mangan, September 03(IPR):
Marking the fourth awareness programme on cooperatives for college students at District level, the Cooperation Department Head Office organised a programme at Sikkim Government College, Mangshila, Mangan District today under the aegis of International Year of Cooperatives - 2025 with the theme ‘Cooperatives Build a Better World’.
The programme was graced by Principal, SGC Mangshila, Dr Karma Samten Bhutia, along with Vice Principal Mr Rojan Tamang, faculty members of the college, Additional RCS Cooperation Department Head Office, Mr Pemba Tshering Lepcha, Joint Registar Cooperation Department Mangan, Mr RH Subba, officers of the Cooperation Department from Head Office and District and over 120 students.
Additional Regsitrar Mr Pemba Tshering Lepcha, in his opening address, informed that the initiative was aimed at sensitizing and educating youth about the concept of cooperatives development. He apprised that these series of awareness programmes have been scheduled in the annual calendar plan of celebration of International Year of Cooperatives - 2025, and added that this was the fourth college programme after Namchi, Gyalshing and Soreng.
The Additional RCS in his address highlighted the vital role cooperatives play in economic development, rural empowerment, and inclusive growth.
Assistant Registar, Cooperation Department, Mr Tsewang Norbu Bhutia, in his role as one of the resource persons, highlighted various aspects of cooperatives, including:
- History of Cooperatives in India and Sikkim.
— The role, responsibilities and importance of cooperatives.
⁃ Principles and Values of Cooperatives.
⁃ Function of the Cooperation Department.
⁃ Process for registration of cooperative societies.
- State Government support to cooperative societies in strengthening cooperative sector.
⁃ Ministry of Cooperation, vision, mission and its various initiatives.
⁃ International Year of Cooperatives and its objectives with the primary focus on youth, women and students.
- Courses, Career and entrepreneurship opportunities for youth and students through cooperatives including the recent established University- Tribhuvan Sahakar University.
Additionally, Auditor Officer, Mangan, Mr Pravesh Bhujel conducted a resourceful session on-
- Overview of the Accounting process.
⁃ Books of accounts- Cash Register, Stock Register, Assets Register, General Ledger, etc.
⁃ Computerization of PACS scheme wherein the Audit and accounting has been digitalised.
The Interactive session that followed had queries on the Audit / Financial aspects. Additional RCS Mr Pemba Tshering Lepcha informed on the importance of Audit of the Societies, Annual General Meeting for a Financial Year wherein the audit report are declared and discussed and the financial status of the society are presented for overall transparency and accountability.
Assistant Registrar, Mangan District, Mr Reekpa Hissey further emphasised on the Government support to the cooperative societies.
ARCS Mangan Mr Pema Wangchuk Bhutia also participated in the discussions.
President, Mangshila MPCS, Mr Phil Raj Limboo shared his personal experience as a cooperative leader and explained how the sector impacts the socio economic status of the members and the overall community.
Speaking on the occasion, Principal, Sikkim Government College Mangshila, Dr Karma Samten Bhutia expressed his gratitude to the Cooperation Department for organising the insightful programme to benefit the students. He emphasised the importance of the cooperative movement in strengthening grassroots democracy, generating local employment, and encouraging self-reliance through collective effort.
He spoke about the National Education Policy and how cooperatives could be one of the activities that the students could explore for financial independence and a sustainable model of community development. He further spoke about the possible role of cooperative societies during emergency situations.
The awareness programme came to a conclusion with a word of thanks by Deputy RCS, Mangan district, Mr Atish Rai, who extended gratitude to the Principal, faculty, support staff and the students, as well as the officers and staff of Cooperation Department.
