Aquaex Northeast 2026 to Strengthen Aquaculture Ecosystem in Northeast India

Gangtok, May 19 (IPR): A press conference on Aquaex Northeast 2026 was held at the conference hall of the Department of Fisheries, Government of Sikkim, in Gangtok today, highlighting opportunities for fisheries and aquaculture development in the Northeast region.
The upcoming expo, scheduled to be held on June 12 and 13 at the Maniram Dewan Trade Centre, Guwahati, Assam, is being jointly organised by the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) and Aquaex India Events.
The press conference was chaired by Mr K.K. Shrestha, Principal Director, Department of Fisheries, and organised by the Department of Fisheries, Government of Sikkim, in collaboration with NFDB and Aquaex India Events.
Addressing the media, Mr Nitesh Gurung, Deputy Director, informed that Aquaex Northeast is a specialised edition of Aquaex India curated to serve the freshwater fisheries and aquaculture ecosystem of Northeast India and other high-potential inland fish-producing states.
He stated that the event would bring together fish farmers, entrepreneurs, hatchery operators, feed manufacturers, technology providers, banks, insurance companies, researchers and government agencies on a single platform to accelerate productivity, profitability and sustainability in the fisheries sector.
Mr Arup Sarmah, Governing Board Member of NFDB and aquaculture entrepreneur, stated that the objective of the event is to ensure that government schemes reach fish farmers while also creating networking and investment opportunities for aquaculture entrepreneurs across the Northeast. He urged farmers to participate in the event and gain exposure to the latest technological advancements in aquaculture.
Mr Rajnish Kumar, Governing Board Member of NFDB and partner of Aquaex, informed that Aquaex Northeast 2026 would mark the 10th edition of Aquaex. He stated that India’s fish production capacity has significantly increased through initiatives of the Government of India and added that the national target is to achieve 400 lakh tonnes of fish production by 2047 under the Viksit Bharat initiative.
Highlighting the nutritional importance of fish, he said the sector has the potential to address the country’s protein deficit while generating employment and entrepreneurship opportunities. He further informed that the event has been structured into three major components: pre-harvest, post-harvest, and seminar sessions, to comprehensively address the challenges faced by fish farmers and aquaculture entrepreneurs.
The exhibition will feature specialised pavilions on production and hatchery systems, feed and nutrition, health and biosecurity, processing and cold-chain infrastructure, and trade and finance. Technologies including RAS and biofloc systems, automated feeders, disease diagnostic kits, blast freezers and aquaculture finance solutions will be showcased for stakeholders across the fisheries value chain.
Officials stated that the expo aligns with the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and would provide a platform for buyer-seller meets, networking and investment opportunities for the Northeast region.
Concluding the press conference, Mr Surendra Bhandari, Assistant Director, appealed to interested fish farmers to contact the Department of Fisheries offices in their respective districts for participation and further details regarding the event.
