Date: 07-May-2025
Singtam, May 7 (IPR): A comprehensive air raid warning mock drill was successfully conducted near the NHPC establishment at Balutar, Singtam under Gangtok District today at 1600 hrs.
The drill was coordinated by the District Disaster Management Authority, Gangtok under the directive of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, in collaboration with multiple response agencies.
The mock drill scenerio enacted was an assumed enemy airstrike targeting an NHPC Power House facility at Balutar, resulting in structural damage and fire breakouts at the premises.
As part of the simulation, several NHPC employees were presumed trapped and injured. The scenario triggered immediate activation of emergency protocols, beginning with sirens sounded by police personnel and civil defense volunteers, alerting the public to seek shelter and shutting down all commercial activities in the vicinity.
Roads were cleared of vehicles and pedestrians, enforcing total silence to simulate wartime blackout conditions.
A swift Search and Rescue Operation was launched. The SDRF Mangley, Home Guard and Civil Defence Gangtok, and Civil Defence Singtam along with fire tenders from the Singtam and Gangtok Fire Station arrived immediately to douse the fire and an ambulance with a medical team for emergency support.
During the operation, responders encountered a simulated obstacle where a fallen tree blocked access to the site. The Forest Department and GREF personnel were mobilised to clear the route, ensuring quick movement of rescue teams.
Trapped personnel were evacuated and an emergency hospital setup was established near the NHPC premises. Critically injured "victims" were then referred to Singtam District Hospital.
