9th Crop Insurance Week Begins in Mangan District

Mangan, July 1 (IPR):
The 9th Crop Insurance Week under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) started today in Mangan District. The campaign, which will run from July 1 to July 7, 2025, is being organised by the Agriculture Department and ATMA, Government of Sikkim, to spread awareness among farmers about crop insurance for the Kharif season.
The programme began with a welcome speech by ADO Kabi Ms Thendal Zangmu Lepcha, and the traditional offering of Khadas to the guests.
The event was attended by SDM Mangan Mr Rinchen D. Bhutia, Panchayat President of Singhik Sentam Ms Phurkit Lepcha, Joint Director of Agriculture Mr Enchung Bhutia, Senior Scientist from KVK Mr Dinesh Basnet, Deputy Directors (Agriculture Department) Mr Pranit Gurung and Mr Padam Bdr. Gurung, along with farmers and staff of the Agriculture Department.
Chief Guest SDM Mangan Mr Rinchen D. Bhutia in his address highlighted the need for awareness about insurance and the risks of ignoring such schemes. He also mentioned how climate change is affecting crop patterns and stressed the importance of insuring not just crops, but also our health, homes and lives.
Deputy Director Mr Padam Bdr. Gurung gave a presentation on the PMFBY scheme, explaining its benefits and how farmers can enroll. He shared that the premium rates are 2% for Kharif crops, 1.5% for Rabi crops, and 5% for commercial and horticultural crops. The campaign also includes door-to-door policy delivery, farmer interactions and awareness activities under the national slogan “Meri Policy Mere Haath”.
Speaking at the event, Panchayat President Ms Phurkit Lepcha shared her own experience about the importance of insurance, especially in times of crop loss due to natural disasters. She encouraged farmers to register early and make use of this opportunity.
Joint Director Mr Enchung Bhutia urged farmers to take full benefit of this government scheme, which is meant to support and protect them from financial loss.
The event ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Agriculture Inspector Mr Tilachand BK. The programme was conducted by ADO Mangan Mr Adarsh Rai.
It is important to note that Future Generali India Insurance Company is the official insurance provider for PMFBY in Mangan District. The campaign will continue across different parts of the district throughout the week to help more farmers understand and join the scheme.
