80th Independence Day Celebrated with Patriotic Fervour at Chungthang
Chungthang, 15 August 2026: The 80th Independence Day was celebrated with great patriotic fervour, enthusiasm and active public participation at Phu Phu Ground, Chungthang, with Shri Samdup Lepcha, Hon’ble Minister, Social Welfare, Women and Child Department, as the Chief Guest. Brigadier P. K. Gahlot, 123 Brigade, Lachung, also graced the occasion.
The Chief Guest was received by Shri Arun Chettri, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Chungthang, along with officers of the Chungthang Sub-Division.
The celebrations commenced with the March Past Parade, coordinated by the SDPO Chungthang and SHO Chungthang, with participation from the 11th Battalion ITBP, NDRF and TTSSS. The parade showcased discipline, coordination and the spirit of patriotism.
The Welcome Address was delivered by the ADC (Development), Chungthang. The message of the Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim was recited by the SDM Chungthang, while the message of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim was read out by BDO Chungthang during the programme.
DISTINGUISHED PARTICIPATION
The programme was attended by Shri Norgay Lachungpa, Chairman, Tourism Department; Shri Pema Ongey Lachungpa, Chairman, Forest Department; and Shri Gyatso Lachenpa, Medicinal Board, along with the Commanding Officers of 20 MECH and 19 Kumaon of the Indian Army, Commandant of 11th Battalion ITBP, SDPO , ADC , BDOs, Officers Commanding of 86 RCC and 115 RCC, GREF, ACF (T), DE (Power), AE (PHE), Deputy Director AH&VS, SHOs of Lachung and Lachen, and Range Officers of Chungthang, Lachen and Lachung.
Representatives of various developmental projects and organisations, including Sikkim Urja Ltd., L&T, Ravitej and GREENKO, also participated in the celebration.
The programme witnessed the active participation of teachers and students of Tasa Tengey Senior Secondary School, Moonlight School and Everest School, Pipons of Lachung and Lachen Dzomsas, Panchayat representatives of Chungthang GPU and Toong Naga GPU, local gentries and members of the public.
CULTURAL PROGRAMME
A vibrant cultural programme added colour to the Independence Day celebration. The programme included the traditional Singhi Dance, followed by dance performances by students of Tasa Tengey Senior Secondary School, Moonlight School and Everest School.
Cultural presentations were also made by Pegong SHG and Lachung Dzomsa. Students of Tasa Tengey Senior Secondary School presented a special Yoga demonstration, highlighting the importance of fitness, discipline and healthy living.
KEYNOTE ADDRESS BY THE CHIEF GUEST
In his keynote address, Hon’ble Minister Shri Samdup Lepcha highlighted several important welfare and development initiatives of the Government, including the Pink Bus initiative, AAMA Sasastikiran, “One Family, One Entrepreneur” initiative and the Mega Homestay Scheme.
The Hon’ble Minister also highlighted the Government’s efforts towards strengthening healthcare services and informed the gathering that the first kidney transplant operation is expected to be conducted at STNM Hospital soon, marking an important milestone in the State’s healthcare sector.
FELICITATION AND RECOGNITION
As part of the celebration, Certificates of Appreciation were presented to Yak Herders, Ex-Servicemen and deserving employees of the Chungthang Sub-Division in recognition of their dedication, service and contribution.
The Shravan Kumar Award, organised by the ADC (Development) and BDO, Mangan, was also distributed during the programme to recognise exemplary dedication towards parents and family.
The Yak Herders Association felicitated officers of the Indian Army and other distinguished persons in recognition of their contribution and service.
The programme also included the felicitation of the Best Government Employees of the Chungthang Sub-Division, acknowledging their commitment, professionalism and dedicated service to the public.
ACTIVE PARTICIPATION OF GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS AND PUBLIC
The successful conduct of the Independence Day celebration was made possible through the active participation and cooperation of officers and employees from the Land Revenue Department, Rural Development Department (RDD), Police, Fire Services, PHE, Cooperation Department, Power Department, Chungthang PHC, GREF, ITBP, Panchayats, NDRF, and other government departments and agencies.
The local gentries, community representatives and the people of the Chungthang Sub-Division also participated enthusiastically, making the celebration a truly collective and inclusive event.
SPORTS AND COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES
The celebration continued with recreational and community activities, including a Tug of War competition that witnessed enthusiastic participation.
An exhibition football match was also played between Government Employees and the Youth of Chungthang, promoting camaraderie, sportsmanship and community participation.
VOTE OF THANKS
The Vote of Thanks was delivered by Shri Kesang R. Lepcha, RO/AD, who expressed gratitude to the Chief Guest, distinguished guests, officers, security forces, government departments, schools, community organisations, participants and the people of Chungthang for their valuable contribution towards making the 80th Independence Day celebration a grand success.
