Pakyong, 03 August(IPR): The 78th Independence Day celebrations in Pakyong kicked off with Mrs Pamin Lepcha, MLA Gnathang Machong cum Advisor to the Social Welfare Department inaugurating the event with a grand opening ceremony at St. Xavier’s School Ground, today.
The ceremony marked the beginning of a series of festivities to commemorate this significant milestone.
The celebration is organised by the 78th Independence Day Celebration Committee (IDCC) in Pakyong, with a special highlight being the open knockout football tournament held in collaboration with the Pakyong Progressive Youths and Pakyong Sporting Club.
Among the guests present at the opening ceremony were Ms Laden Lhamu Bhutia, Zilla Adhyaksha, Mr Agawane Rohan Ramesh, IAS, District Collector Pakyong, Mr Sangay Gyasto Bhutia, ADC Pakyong, Mr Rinzing Chopel Rai, ASP Pakyong, Mr Robin Pd Sewa ADC (Dev), Mr PR Dulal, Sr RTO and local gentry.
The Open Knockout Football Tournament 2024 has a lineup of 14 teams competing for the title.
To add to the competitive spirit, a cash reward of Rs. three lakhs awaits the tournament champions, while the runners-up stand to receive Rs. two lakhs as recognition for their outstanding performance on the field.
The tournament officially commenced with a match between Dongrong FC and Rhenock Rongali Academy, where Dongrong FC emerged victorious with a scoreline of 04 – 02.
In recognition of outstanding performance during the match, Mr Roman Bhujel of Dongrong FC was awarded the title of Man of the Match.
The opening celebration also had a cultural dance performance by Dikiling Sr. Sec. School.
