50 Years of Sikkim Statehood Boxing Championship Kicks Off in Gangtok
Gangtok, October 14 (IPR): The 50 Years of Sikkim Statehood Boxing State-Level Championship commenced today at the Boxing Hall, White Hall Complex, Gangtok. Organised by the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Sikkim, the two-day championship will conclude tomorrow with the final bouts in various categories.
The inaugural session was graced by Minister for Roads and Bridges, Mr N B Dahal, as the Chief Guest, and Advisor-cum-MLA, Forest and Environment Department Mr Tenzing Norbu Lamtha, as the Guest of Honour.
The event witnessed spirited performances in the Under-17 Junior Boys category finals, where the young pugilists displayed remarkable skill and determination:
· 57–60 kg: Mr Kunal Darnal (Gangtok District) triumphed over Mr Biraj Ghatraj (Pakyong District).
· 63–66 kg: Mr Phurzang Lepcha (Gangtok District) defeated Mr Noel Cintury (Pakyong District).
· 66–70 kg: Mr Kalzang W. Bhutia (Gangtok District) won against Mr Ashis Rai (Pakyong District).
· 70–75 kg: Mr Daksh Choudary (Pakyong District) overcame Mr Prayanshu Rai (Gangtok District).
Briefing on the occasion, State Nodal Officer-cum-Joint Director (SYA) Mr Jigmee Yodzer Lepcha informed that the sports activities are being organised under the banner of 50 Years of Sikkim Statehood, with each district hosting different state-level sporting disciplines. He added that Gangtok District is hosting Boxing and Table Tennis events as part of the celebrations.
The day’s proceedings featured the quarter-final rounds of the Junior Boys category and semi-final bouts in the Junior Girls category, bringing together promising young pugilists from across the state.
The championship will conclude tomorrow with the final matches.
Also in attendance were Chairperson, State Sports Development Board, Mr Rinzing Chopel Bhutia; Chairperson, Labour Department, Mr Prem Raj Gurung; Secretary, Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Ms Yangchen D. Tamang; Chief Engineer (SYA), Ms Milan Pradhan; Arjuna Awardee, Mr Jas Lal Pradhan; and senior officials from the department.
