23- Sopakha Gram Prashasan Kendra Celebrates Jal Arpan Diwash 2026
Gyalshing, February 11 (IPR):Jal Arpan Diwas 2026, a ceremonial event under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), was celebrated today at the 23-Sopakha Gram Prashasan Kendra (GPK).
Mr Surat Kumar Gurung, Director-cum-ADC (Development) of the Rural Development Department, Gyalshing, graced the event as the Chief Guest. He was accompanied by several officials, including AD PRI Mr Lek Nath Gurung and Panchayat President Ms Munna Maya Gurung.
Upon arrival, the Director was warmly welcomed. A "Watershed Rally" followed, where students from Government Secondary School Sopakha carried posters with slogans like “Water Is Life, Keep It Flowing” and “Save Water; It Will Save You Later.”
Director-Cum-ADC (Dev.) RDD Gyalshing Mr Gurung, in his address, extended celebratory wishes of the Jal Arpan Diwash to the attendees. He encouraged students to uphold the significance of water and voluntarily engage themselves in the conservation effort.
Mr Gurung mentioned that the Jal Jeevan Mission is a nationwide programme aimed at inculcating an efficient approach for the conservation of the available sources of fresh drinking water. He articulated the essence of 'Each One, Teach One' for the holistic implementation of the mission and motivated the dissemination of the beneficial impacts of water source preservation.
He further highlighted the inception of the mission, underlined its embedded guidelines and mentioned the aspiration of the Gyalshing District Water and Sanitation Committee for grassroots-level implementation. He emphasised the crucial practice of efficient record keeping pertinent to sources aligned with the number of connected households and advised that appropriate hygiene be maintained for contamination-free drinking water at the designated sources.
Director RDD Gyalshing maintained that District Administration Gyalshing, in coordination with the Rural Development Department, Government of Sikkim, is working tirelessly to extend upfront address to the aspiration of the GPU. He also mentioned the embedded legal provisions upon violation of the guidelines pertinent to wastage of drinking water and hinted at the official release of the order for the constitution of the Specialised Panchayat Level Committee at the GPK level entrusted with the responsibility of stringent supervision.
Mr Gurung, at the outset, outlined the subsidiary attributes of the pro-people initiative under the VB-G RAM G 2025, Vibrant Village Programme and Swachh Bharat Mission.
Panchayat President Sopakha GPK Ms Gurung noted that Panchayats, along with the BFEs and volunteers, are working around the clock to ensure basic water supply in the GPU. She underscored the critical need for timely payment of the nominal fees for maintenance and the requisite tools for emergency repair works.
Panchayat Member Majbari Dara Ms Laxmi Rai even recited a poem titled "Prakruti Ko Sundarta" that prompted attendees to reflect on the values and beauty of nature. Whereas, a rendition of Jahan Bagcha Teesta Rangeet, the de facto state song of Sikkim, was performed by GPK staff.
At the programme, a formal ceremony to bestow a token of love was extended to Director-Cum-ADC Development Gyalshing by the Panchayats. Felicitations were conferred upon Barefoot Engineers and Volunteers through the hands of the chief guest in recognition of the commendable efforts to ensure an uninterrupted water supply in the GPU.
A team of Barefoot Engineers even conducted a demonstration on the Field Testing Kit utilised for on-site analysis and assessment of parameters such as pH level, chlorine, iron, fluoride, nitrates, and hardness in the water without needing a full laboratory, by colour comparison or the titration method.
The day-long programme had participation of teachers and students from Govt Primary School Sepi, Govt Primary School Sopakha, Govt Primary School Kunabar, Panchayat Inspectors, Bare-Foot Engineers and officials of the GPK Sopakha.
