"Regenerative Tourism" Awareness Drive Highlights Eco-Conscious Development
Pakyong, May 07 (IPR): With the ongoing celebration of the 50th anniversary of Sikkim's Statehood, the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, Pakyong District, organised a series of events at the district level today. The celebrations included the inauguration of a Fishing and Camping site at River Reshi, as well as an awareness drive and marathon held in Rhenock. These initiatives were aimed at promoting regenerative tourism, environmental consciousness, and showcasing the region’s untapped natural beauty.
A highlight of the programme was the inauguration of the Fishing and Camping site at River Reshi, envisioned as a community-led tourism initiative to encourage eco-friendly recreational activities. The project is aimed at drawing attention to the region’s pristine riverside environment while generating livelihood opportunities for the local population. The site is expected to attract nature lovers and adventure seekers alike, adding a new dimension to Pakyong’s tourism offerings.
Simultaneously, an awareness drive was conducted at Rhenock with the central theme “Regenerative Tourism – Applying Ethics of Permaculture.” The session was led by Mr Utsav Pradhan, CEO of TIEEDI, who spoke passionately about the importance of sustainable tourism, community engagement, and the ethical use of natural resources. He elaborated on how regenerative tourism, rooted in the principles of permaculture, can create long-lasting positive impacts for both the environment and the local communities.
To further promote health, fitness, and awareness of local natural attractions, a mini-marathon was held covering a 2.5 km stretch from Rorathang to Indrani Falls, with the participation of 90 students from different schools, aimed at promoting tourism, fitness, and awareness about Indrani Falls as a local attraction, which was graced by Chief Patron, Garib Jan Kalyan Prakosthan, Mr Prabhakar Golay in the presence of Zilla Upadhakshya, Pakyong District, Mrs Prabha Pradhan.
The day also witnessed cultural performances by the students of Rhenock Senior Secondary School, followed by a felicitation ceremony for Ms Arpana Acharya, a finalist on Voice of Nepal, acknowledging her achievements and contributions.
Also present were BDO Rhenock, Mr SK Dhungana; SHO Pakyong, Shri Pradeep Pradhan, Zilla Panchayats members, local gentry, along with officials from the United Silk Route Association, Civil Society, Rhenock and Driver Association, and Tourism and Civil Aviation Department.
