Women Empowerment in Sikkim

Grassroots empowerment for Sikkimese women

Sikkimese women, whose empowerment in every sphere is widely celebrated, also stands shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts in the Panchayati Raj Institution. This was delivered by
Hon’ble Chief Minister Pawan Chamling and his Sikkim Democratic Front government through an amendment in the Sikkim Panchayat Act in 2011. There are 169 Gram Panchayat Units (GPUs) in Sikkim with 905 Panchayats in each ward. There are also 95 Zilla Panchayat members with provision for four Zilla Adhakshyas and four Zilla Up-Adhakshya. Fifty percent of these panchayat members are women after the 2012 Panchayat Elections, a first equal proportionate representation in
rural local bodies in the country. In 2010, Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Pawan Chamling had announced 50 percent reservation for Sikkimese women in the Panchayati Raj
Institution. The reservation will provide women equal opportunity and I am confident that they will use this opportunity to empower themselves besides shouldering equal responsibility and to work for comprehensive development of Sikkim, he said. Women in Sikkim have observed that the 50 percent reservation is a challenging responsibility for them in the grassroots level decision
making process. Women of Sikkim must be able to dispense their responsibilities fully and match the respect given to them by the State government, they say.
