Mission Sikkim Tourism 2015

Best Destination in Southeast Asia

The Government of Sikkim under the tourism-oriented Hon’ble Chief Minister, Shri Pawan Chamling has adopted Tourism Mission 2015 to make Sikkim the principle tourism destination in Southeast Asia and worldwide.

The mission, as per the vision of the Hon’ble Chief Minister, is to make tourism the main livelihood of people in Sikkim and to develop skilled human resources for tourism sector. The mission has been designed in a manner to provide a ‘Feel Sikkim from within’ experience to tourists through the Sikkimese way of life, environment, happiness index and cultural strengths.

Sikkim, with its natural beauty and peacefulness, has emerged as one of most tourist hotspots in India and abroad. The land of mountain and monasteries has been recommended as the best region to visit in 2014 by the international travel guide ‘Lonely Planet’. Tourism is a major engine of economic growth, employment generator and poverty alleviators and the Government of Sikkim has endorsed this hospitality sector as a main civil industry of the State.

Under the mission, the State government targets to promote sustainable development of tourism and encourages private sector to develop tourism related infrastructure and services without disturbing the ecology and environment. In fact, the mission recognizes that environment and rich biodiversity of Sikkim must be protected for tourism benefits.

The mission contemplates to establish and strengthen the Institution of Network of Stakeholders which is government led, private sector driven and community welfare oriented. It targets effective linkages and close relationship between the interlinked departments and agencies such as Home, Police, Forest, Environment & Wildlife, Transport, Roads, Culture, Rural Management & Development, Urban Development, Industry, Army, BRO, Railways, Civil Aviation, NGOs, etc.

Sikkim is first organic State of the country which adds a unique value to its tourism appeal. The mission seeks to dovetail local cuisines, culture, tradition, natural beauty and resources into the tourism sector. It also aims to promote all destinations in the State for tourism. Eco-tourism, homestays and adventure tourism are included for promotion in the mission.

The Tourism Mission 2015 further promotes wellness tourism like meditation, spa, yoga and herbal therapies, tea tourism and conference tourism utilizing the easy availability of serene environment of the State.  Investors are coming to Sikkim to set up high-end hotels offering wellness tourism.

Pilgrimage tourism is coming up in a big way in Sikkim with ingenious projects conceptualized by the Hon’ble Chief Minister. Projects like Siddhesvara Dham in Namchi, Guru Padmasambhava statue in Samdruptse and Buddha Park in Ravangla have captured the imagination of people of India and abroad.

It is these tourism products and vision of the Hon’ble Chief Minister that saw Sikkim listed as the best region to visit in 2014 by the Lonely Planet.

The mission has various action plans to cater to the different tourism interests of both domestic and international tourists. All tourism stakeholders, both government and non-governmental organizations, are working together to make Sikkim as the best tourism destination in India and abroad.
