Awareness programme for progressive farmers conducted at Sikkip BAC

Namchi, 10 Sept (IPR): Block Administrative Centre (BAC), Sikkip organised an awareness programme for progressive farmers cum awarding of students’ participation under Jal Shakti Abhiyan at the conference hall of BAC Sikkip in South Sikkim today.

The programme had the presence of Director, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, Shri Rakesh Kumar Singh, Deputy Director, Education South, Shri D.B. Rai, Technical Officer, Jal Shakti Abhiyan, Rabongla Subdivision, Shri Tapan Talukdar, and Programme Coordinator, KVK Namthang, Shri I.P. Shivakoti, along with progressive farmers, students and staff.

Programme Coordinator, KVK Namthang, Shri Shivakoti, who was also the resource person, highlighted various programmes launched under Krishi Vigyan Kendra to the farmers. He also briefed the gathering about Jal Shakti Abhiyan Phase I (1st July 2019- 15th Sept 2019) and also presented a detailed power-point presentation on water conservation strategies.

He spoke on the new techniques of irrigation that is imperative for water conservation. He suggested to promote efficient water use for irrigation and better crop choices.

Block Development Officer, Sikkip, Smt Tirsang Tamang, in her address spoke on the importance of water conservation and present scenario of water stressed areas under South district. She also stated that extensive awareness activities needs to be taken by all the stakeholders for conservation of water.

An interaction session among the farmers and the officials was also held as a part of awareness programme under Jal Shakti Abhiyan followed by inter school quiz competition, drawing competition and essay writing competition conducted by BAC Sikkip.

The programme also saw distribution of prizes and certificates in various competitions to the participating students from Lingyong Junior High School, Chumlok Junior High School, Gumpadara Primary School and Omchu Secondary School.
