Updates on the Weeklong High-Altitude Rescue Training being conducted at the 17th Mile Nathula Acclimatisation Centre
Gangtok, November 7; On the fourth day of the ongoing training session, participants had the honour of interacting with Colonel Ranjan Kumar, from the 3rd Battalion, 11th Gorkha Rifles, Indian Army.
Drawing from his extensive field experience, Col. Kumar shared valuable insights on the challenges of operating in high-altitude terrains and the various hazards faced in such extreme environments.
He elaborated on the constant risks associated with high-altitude regions, including Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), flash floods, earthquakes, avalanches, landslides, and altitude- and cold-related injuries. Through real-life examples from his service, Col. Kumar highlighted the importance of preparedness and resilience in facing these natural threats.
Furthermore, he emphasised the critical role of effective communication systems, adequate equipment, and well-trained personnel in mitigating the impact of such disasters. His session provided participants with a deeper understanding of disaster management strategies in high-altitude and vulnerable terrains.
The session also had the presence of Joint Director, DDMA Mr Sonam W. Lepcha, Deputy Director, DDMA, Ms Bijayata Kharel and Principal, MAIS Mr Kunzang Gyatso. It showcased the collaboration between the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and Mountaineering and Adventure Institute of Sikkim (MAIS) in promoting awareness and preparedness.
The event concluded with an engaging interaction, leaving participants inspired by Col. Ranjan Kumar’s experiences and the Indian Army’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and ensuring operational readiness in some of the world’s most challenging conditions.
