GANGTOK, October 01: Gangtok Municipal Corporation ( GMC) held the closing ceremony of 'The Swachhata Hi Seva 2024 campaign with the theme ' Swabhav Swachhata Sanskaar Swachhata' here at Chintan Bhawan.
The ceremony was chaired by Minister UDD Bhoj Raj Rai as chief guest along with MLA Gangtok, Delay Namgyal Barfungpa, Mayor GMC, Nell Bahadur Chettri, Deputy Mayor GMC Tshering Pladen Bhutia, Principal Secretary UDD Jitendra Singh Raje, Secretary UDD MT Sherpa, District Collector, Gangtok cum Chairman, District Steering committee, Mr Tushar G Nikhare,
Minister UDD Bhoj Raj Rai addressing the function expressed his gratitude towards the GMC Mayor, Deputy Mayor, councillors, Commissioner GMC along with all officials, sataffs and safai Mitras for their dedicated service rendered in keeping Gangtok clean.
He lauded the effort of GMC in generating awareness of Swachhata by holding various activities during the campaign. The minister said that each and every citizen of the state must come together to mitigate the challenge of Solid waste, it is not possible for the government, UDD, and GMC to attain success.
If all the stakeholders at their personal level extend a hand in managing the solid waste issue faced currently we are sure to achieve success, he added. He further stressed that there has to be a change in mindset and behaviour with regards to solid waste and if segregation is met at all levels with dedication we as government, Department and its agencies can manage the waste as required and make the state Swachh as desired by the Chief Minister and the Prime Minister.
He mentioned that there is a list of items which is being viewed regarding imposing a ban in the state, we will initiate a ban after a thorough discussion with the officials and experts. The sale of Pan Masala in the state has been banned already but the sale still continues, he requested the Department to initiate strict checking and take action.
Similarly, he also appealed to all the owners of dogs to refrain from taking their pets to public places for Defecation as we are looking to impose fines shortly. He pointed out the safai Mitras working to keep the state clean are engaged in cleaning on a regular basis but the defecation by pets in public places is an issue, so considering their nature of work it's high time we take action.
Furthermore, he informed that the department is also planning to issue trade licences to SSC, COI or those having genuine documents only as this is one of the ways forward to safeguard the local interest. The subletting of trade licenses will also be thoroughly checked so that local aspirants are given priority.
He urged all to stand firmly to safeguard the interest of Sikkim and Sikkimese considering the future generation and to join hands together in making Sikkim clean along with attaining the vision of the Chief Minister of Sunaulo and Smriddh Sikkim.
Mayor GMC in his address expressed his gratitude towards the Chief Minister and Minister UDD for extending all support to GMC in making Gangtok Swach and maintaining it too. He placed a detailed report on the activities initiated by GMC over the years with respect to making Gangtok Swachh beautiful. He mentioned that that were challenges faced along the way but the support met from the CM was immense and we were able to meet the challenges with ease. Today we have initiated waste collection along NH 10 at Night, an app on the mobilisation of the GMC vehicle has been introduced availing convenience to the public along with other activities, he added. He also said that GMC for its part has been carrying out all possible initiatives but we still expect more support from the citizens to attain 100% success with regard to solid waste management.
He appealed to all the citizens of Gangtok to extend possible Cooperation with respect to Swachhata and the segregation of waste at source.
Earlier, the program was also addressed by Commissioner cum Secretary UDD Jitendra Singh Raje and District Collector Gangtok Tushar G Nikhare.
Commissioner GMC RB Bhandari presented a brief report on the activities initiated by GMC under the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign 2024 across all GMC wards.
During the program Minister UDD administered the Swachhata pledge to all officials, staff, students, and SHGs present.
The program held a felicitation program wherein five safaimitras, One driver, and one Officer were presented with an Award during the celebration along with a letter of application felicitated to GMC Supervisors.
Similarly, the top three winners of each event held by GMC celebrating the Swachhata Hi Sewa-2024 campaign like essay completion, college level, painting competition, school level, Waste to Art, and School level were also bestowed by the Chief guest.
Likewise, a participation certificate for the plantation drive to Lumsay Junior High School under Ek Ped Maa Key Naam along with felicitation to CRH Manipal, Urban PHC, Gangtok was held.
The program had the participation of all the officials, staff of GMC along with SHG, Students and teachers of various schools.
