NCORD Committee Meeting for Mangan District Deliberates on Measures to Curb Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
Mangan, Sept 3 (IPR):
The district level NCORD Meeting for Mangan district was convened at the district administrative centre today.
The meeting was chaired by Additional District Collector, Mangan, Mr Pema Wangchen Namkarpa. It was attended by SP Mangan Mr Sonam Detchu Bhutia, ASP Mangan Mr Mani Kumar Tamang, SDM Mangan Mr Sandeep Kumar, CMO Dr Tempo T Kaleon, and other Committee Members of NCORD.
The meeting began with the detailed deliberation on the minutes of the meeting of the State Level NCORD Meeting held on 25th July, 2025 under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary, Government of Sikkim. The ADC read out the activities earmarked for various departments under Mangan district. He stressed that the State Government has initiated strict measures to curb drug/substance abuse and illicit trafficking in the State. Accordingly, directives were issued to all the concerned departments as well as the district collectors of all the six districts to take region specific measures to combat the challenge.
The anticipated action from the NCORD Committee and other stakeholders was discussed in detail.
SP Mangan Mr Sonam Detchu Bhutia informed the house about a new initiative taken by Mangan Police starting today. In line with the adage ‘Charity begins at home’, the Mangan District Police, with the support of District Hospital Mangan, began the random medical examination of police personnel to ascertain any case of substance abuse among the fraternity. This he said was a preventive step. He added that relevant treatment and corrective facilities would be provided to the personnel if necessary.
The meeting also drew the attention of the Committee towards the need for strict vigilance on issues of drug and substance abuse among Government employees.
The members of the NCORD Committee also placed their views during the meeting which were taken note of.
Prior to the NCORD Meeting, the ADC chaired the meeting of the Joint Action Committee on Prevention of Drug/Substance Abuse and Illicit Trafficking among children below 18 years of age.
District Child Protection Officer, Mangan, Ms Wendy M Lepcha briefed about the role and objective of the Joint Action Committee and highlighted the action taken by the Committee on the parameters laid down by the Government of India. The DCPO stated that the aim of the JAC meetings was to build coordination among stakeholders to deal with any reported case of drug/substance abuse among children below the age of 18 years. The steps taken to keep the educational institutions free of drug abuse were also shared and further action to be taken were discussed.
The submissions made by the DCPO were further substantiated by the officers present in the meeting, and a collective resolve was made for better coordination to prevent any case of drug and substance abuse among children.
