Literary and Cultural Spirit Marks Continuing Celebrations of 212th National-Level Bhanu Jayanti at Soreng
Soreng, July 7 (IPR): The ongoing celebration of the 212th National-Level Bhanu Jayanti 2026 continued today at the Engineering Complex Hall, Dak Bungalow, Soreng which highlighted the importance and significance of Nepali language through literary and cultural presentations.
The programme featured a series of literary and cultural presentations by members of the literary fraternity, students and participants from across the district that included song performances, poem recitations and the launch of a book dedicated to Nepali language, literature and culture.
Celebration of the event forms part of the series of programmes leading up to the grand National-Level celebration on July 13, commemorating the legacy of Adikavi Bhanu Bhakta Acharya in recognition of his invaluable contribution to Nepali language, literature and culture.
Former Chairman of (Sikkim Akademi), Mr SR Khajum, attended the programme as the Chief Guest. Upon his arrival, he was accorded a warm welcome by the organising committee.
Addressing the gathering, Mr SR Khajum expressed his gratitude and said it was a matter of immense pride that the National-Level Bhanu Jayanti celebration was being hosted in Soreng. He underscored the importance of preserving Nepali language and enriching its literary heritage while encouraging the younger generation to promote the rich literary and cultural traditions of the community. He emphasised that language plays a vital role in shaping one’s identity and highlighted the responsibility of parents in nurturing children’s proficiency in the language from early on.
Further, he thanked the organising committee for inviting him to be part of the first National-Level Bhanu Jayanti celebration held in the district and expressed his happiness at being present and witnessing a book launch by Mr Hari Kumar Niroula. Urging students and the gathering to take pride in the Nepali language, he shared experiences from his years of service and recalled the immense sense of pride felt by the Nepali-speaking community when the language was included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. He remembered the late Chief Minister Mr Nar Bahadur Bhandari for his historic contribution towards securing constitutional recognition for Nepali language and noted that his efforts earned him widespread respect, including among officers from other States. He concluded by urging to always have a sense of pride in the language and inculcate a sense of responsibility to uphold the interest of the language which shapes the identity and also defines and represents the Nepali speaking community.
The Chief Guest was felicitated by the organising committee during the programme followed by the launch of the book publication in his presence.
Earlier, Mr CP Sharma delivered the welcome address, highlighting the importance of preserving and promoting the Nepali language and its literary traditions through such initiatives.
Further the programme also included the distribution of certificates to participants of the poem recitation and cultural presentations, as well as contributors, in recognition of their participation and valuable contribution to the celebration.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from literary enthusiasts, students, officials and members of the public, reflecting the collective commitment towards preserving and promoting Nepali language, literature and cultural heritage.
Also present in the event were Political Secretary to the Chief Minister Mr Jacob Khaling, Vice President of (ITS) Mr CP Sharma, Zilla Up Adhakshya (Soreng) Mr CB Kami, District Collector (Soreng) Mr Dhiraj Subedi, ADC (Soreng) Mr DR Bista, SDM (HQ)Mr PK Subba , SDM (Soreng) Ms Sakchum Lepcha, BDOs, OSDs, HODs and officials, representatives from various literature associations, school students , participants and staffs from various line departments.
